| any one have a liver compromised? Hey guys, i have an 8 month old 3 pd little girl. about a month ago she was hospitalized, ended up being her liver. she is now on prescription diet l/d, her health has bounced back dramatically. but now i have another problem! i have noticed a couple sores on her back. they are like small wounds, hard, and scabby. she also has an ear infection. the doc gave me some ear meds and said the sores looked like a bites. i've been researching home cooked meals for her, since i think the food might be causing her skin and ear probs. can anyone tell me what they have decided to feed their babies with liver disease.. i want my baby to be as healthy as possible, skin and liver!.... thanks to any one who can give me some insight! |

| http://pets.groups.yahoo.com/group/L...d_MVD_Support/ Please go here and sign up. They can help you. There are a few people here with liver compromised dogs. What has your girl been diagnosed with? Liver shunt? MVD? What tests have been done? What are her bile acid numbers and other blood work results? I have no idea what is causing the scabbing but I guess it could be the food. There is a liver cleansing diet created by Dr. Jean Dodds that quite a few people use. Some replace the fish with egg. I highly recommend homecooking. It is so much better than Science Diet.

| her diagnosis. my girl had a blood test done showing that it was her liver, she almost died during the hospitalization, before the test was done, and remarkably she came back to life! the vet said that the next step was an ultrasound, but after seeing how well she had bounced back, the vet said just keep her on a change of diet, if she is alive and well there is no need to do further testing to overly stress her and cost me more money. |

| Hi, several of us have liver compromised dogs. Please join the group that Ellie May posted It is a wonderful group where we all have experience with liver compromised dogs. Everything is discussed from diets to medicines to supplements, etc. Believe me, you will find it very helpful and you will learn a lot about liver compromised pets and what to do/not do... Is your baby on lactulose? If they suspect MVD or liver shunt, it is very important that she be on lactulose to help push the toxins out of the body. If this is not done, toxins will build up in your baby's system over time and eventually may cause neurological symptoms... Did they suggest milk thistle or hepatosupport? Denosyl or Sam-E? These are supplements that are beneficial to the liver and help protect the liver from further damage and also help regenerate the parts that are already damaged. Will they be doing an ultrasound?? An ultrasound will help tell you if the liver is atrophied and if she has any crystals/stones in her bladder.

| I'm so glad your baby is doing well. I am a bit confused though. If your vet believes that your baby almost died from a liver issue then there has to be more testing. I don't really see a way around it. A low protein diet is necessary but supplements are also necessary if it is microvascular dysplasia. Surgery would be necessary if it is an operable shunt. Please get another opinion if your vet isn't taking this seriously.

| you know, my vet has suggested to me to not do any more testing.... like i said she is doing great know, all her symptoms have subsided...but i am concerned about what is going on in that liver... i do have feelings that he either doesn't know much about it or he doesn't care...like he doesn't want to tell me much.. if it wasn't for this website, i honestly wouldn't know much about my girl at all! but to answer a question she is on prescription diet L/D... and that's it.. when she first got diagnosed the doc was giving her a shot everyday for a week, when i asked what it was he said it was vitamins to help get the toxins out... also, for about 3 months she has has a cough, i don't know if this is from her problem or not. she is not on meds for it. thanks so much for all your guys help... i am going to get a second opinion on her today!.. and i am going to get her scabby problem under control, and i am going to start home cooking for her, i think she is allergic to the l/d,she itches like crazy!.. |

| The symptoms may have subsided, but that doesn't mean they can't come back...A protein C test is very affordable and can help determine if your baby has MVD or a liver shunt. This may be worth looking into, as it is less expensive than an ultrasound or a scintigraphy. Also, an ultrasound may not show a shunt at all...But it can show if the liver has atrophied and if your dog has any stones/crystals in the bladder.

| It is just a blood test and it is sent to Cornell. I am going to save us both the headache and not get scientific. All I know about it is if the numbers are in a certain range it is most likely liver shunt and if they are in another it is most likely MVD. This test is not 100% accurate but is a good indicator.

| You can buy Hepatosupport at www.homevet.com which contains milk thistle and vitamin b's which are important for liver compromised dogs. When you purchase it, give them your dog's weight, and they will tell you how much to give your dog. If you prefer to give milk thistle alone, you can buy it at any health food store. If you buy liquid, make sure it contains NO alcohol. Or you can buy milk thistle in capsule form where it's dried herb.
