| How long can a stubborn Yorkie go without food? As I read all the post for recommendations on how to get my Yorkie to eat, I find myself even more frustrated. We are both stubborn: she will only eat Cesars and I want her to eat dry food because of her teeth. People around me, as much as I ask them, keep on giving her people food in my absence which doesn't help me at all. I have, honestly, tried everything. Yesterday I bought Royal Canin 30, which is for picky eaters. She hasn't even smelled it. She refuses to eat and I can hear her stomach making noises because she's hungry. One night I literately had to put food in her month and when she realized that she wasn't going anywhere, she ate. I don't want to do this again. Can I just leave the food and rely that she will be so hungry that she will eat? I have been to the vet for this but it didn't help. She's so quiet during the day and I guess it's because she has little energy. She can go 2 days without food if I don't give in and give her Ceasars. I don't think I've ever been this concerned about her. Should I try cooking for her? What veggies to you give your yorkies to supplement their diet? Any recipes?

| I thought I was reading a post that I had written. Word for word you were telling the story of what goes on between Lexi and myself when it comes to food. I bought the Natural Balance meat rolls. They were great for 2 days and now she mostly turns her nose up at them. This has now become a battle of the wills. I have been spending a fortune on different dog foods and finally wrote for advise on this forum. As usual, I got some great advice and insite. My daughter was always told 'this is not a restaurant and you will eat what is given to you'. Guess what, she did. I am now beginning to apply this same rule to Lexi. I also have other family members that keep feeding her people food even though I beg them not to. They think that by giving her only little tastes it isn't the same as giving her a plate full of food. Hang in there. I've never once read a story of a healthy animal that starved themselves when food was available. Keep fresh food available along with water and hard foods. Lexi never ate the hard food until recently. Now she's eating it more often. I'm sure that it's to take the edge off the hunger. |

| A healthy dog will never starve itself . If you continue to give her the food she wants , she'll be on the winning position and every time you'll place dry food , she will refuse it knowing that you worry about this situation and finally she'll get what she want . |

| YorkiesRule, I know this problem is very common with Yorkies but I am just so frustrated, especially with people who give her food and spoil my efforts. I, too, have spent a fortune. Can you give me examples of fresh food that you give your Yorkie?

| I am having the same problem with Louie...I feel so bad when he does not eat so by the end of the day I usually give in and end up chopping up some chicken for him or something. But if you really want him to eat the dry food, have you tried mixing it in a small amout of peanut butter....Louie used to eat that when I first got him and the vet recomended it so I dont think that it is a bad thing to do. Well, good luck. |

| My dogs both love caesars too. I give it to them as a snack. At first they would not eat their dry either but eventually gave in and now they eat the dry also.

| Well, I had a serious talk to the family today. If they stop sneaking food to Nina, maybe she will go back to eating dry. I'm glad to hear that you are having success with Jewels and Chachi.

| If you have too much trouble with dry food , maybe you could use this . This is dog food but in powder , and gradually change it for regular dry food . |

| Hi AVBORGES - I so understand your frustration. Lexi was almost into her 3rd day of not eating. Why? My dad fed and she had roast beef for lunch. I was determined not to give in, even though I was pretty darn close to tears. I can't stand it when she doesn't eat. Then last night I made her a dinner plate of the Natural Balance Turkey beef role and some of the Pedigree Little Champs beef with cheese (the pouches). She walked over to it, sniffed it from like 10 inches away, turned around and got into her bed. I left that plate there and I too turned around and walked away. This morning when I was getting coffee, the plate was empty. Actually, not only was it empty, it was shiny clean. Every morsel gone! Will she have another 3 day non eating stint? Most likely. My folks (78 and 82) live upstairs and when we go out they come down and take her. Lexi gives them love, companionship and attention and they give Lexi love, attention and ROAST BEEF! But as much as she loves the roast beef, 3 days without food proved to be too much for her will power. Hang in there and stand your ground. One last note. Lexi never much liked dry dog food. My vet said not to worry about it because he wants me to brush her teeth (yuk! - but I do). |

| Three days - that's the timespan it took for Kali to eat. I simply put the bowl down with a few hours in between and calls her and offers it to her. I can't let it be on the floor as Mare will eat it all *LOL* I tried handfeeding her and guess what?! She ate! And that was what did it for me - it's not the food, it's the attention. So no more attention. I pick up the little one and let the food stand there for Kali to eat. And she eats

| I know your concern. I went through the same thing. Our home looked like a fast food restaurant. I am so use to healthy eaters, with our two big dogs. Then when we got Maggie, I thought she was so tiny and I was so scared that I would do something wrong. She then turned into one picky dog, and it was all my fault. I turned to YT for help. I was told that she would not starve. They were RIGHT. She went a little over a day without eating. I did give her Nutrical three times the first day of no eating. The next day, she ate very well. Maggie eats Royal Canin 33 Mini Puppy and Innova Puppy mixed together. She liked them both, so I just mixed them. She thinks she is getting a variety of food now. As far as human food, it is very little and very far in-between. I learned my lesson on that one.
