| Luxating Patellas ??? When I had Teddy at the E-vet the other night he asked me if anyone has ever told me that he as luxating patellas I responded no, because my vet has never mentioned this, but he went on to explain to me what the condition was and that it would eventually require surgery to correct. I know that someone on YT must have had this experience before and I was just hoping for some info on the disorder, like what is the approximate cost of the surgery? How old should they be when its done? Should I wait until he shows symptoms, or just do it? I haven't been to the regular vet to discuss it yet, it just seemed strange that the E-vet brought all of this up after five minutes with him (when the reason I brought him in had nothing to do with his patellas) and my regular vet who has seen him numerous times never mentioned it Any info would be greatly appreciated !

| LP is a common disorder with Yorkies. It can be both genetic or due to injury. Sometimes it requires surgery and sometimes it doesn't. You pup needs to be fully grown before having the surgery. I know that several here have dogs who've had the procedure done. Hopefully they will be able to give you some first hand knowledge of what that is like. |

Phantom Queen Morrigan Donating Member | LPs are quite common in small dogs. Many people here have gone thru this with their dogs. You can do a search for luxating patellas and find lots of information here. The price varies from area to area. In my area it would cost at least $2500 for one leg and $3500-4000 for both

| Simon was diagnosed with LP when he was a baby and he is 4 now and doing just fine. He runs, jumps, plays ball and it has yet to be an issue for us. Like the others said, it's very common and there is a ton of information here about it. Good Luck~ |

| That makes me feel alot better, I was feeling horrible because this e-vet was making me feel like I should have known about this (he's only 7 1/2 months old) and he hasn't shown any signs of any trouble at all so I guess I was feeling a little inadequate as his mommy.

| Patellas Hi, It only takes a couple of seconds to check the patellas and it is a common problem in small dogs. Most vets check for bad patellas atopmatically. I just had surgery done on both patellas on a 2 yr old 5lb yorkie and both patellas done on a very fragile 7 yr old 3 lb poodle. The yorkie bounced right back, the poodle however has been through rehab and all and still cannot straighten his legs, walks with bent back legs, he will probably never walk right again, I believe my mistake was in waiting till he was older that and he is quite delicate, his little legs are no bigger around than my baby finger. The orthopedic surgeon said my yorkie is a healing machine, and that the yorkies usually do quite well. Cost of both surgeries was 1500.00 per dog for 2 patellas. Of course with the complications my poodle had it was a bit more for him in the end. If I had to do it again I would still do the yorkie and I would do the poodle at 2-3yrs old. The poodle is not in pain anymore but will probably have to deal with arthritis. It is a difficult decision but if you decide to do it I would do it while the little one is still young. God bless.

Donating YT 14K Club Member | There are some good posts in this thread. I would however, take it up with your regular vet and even seek another opinion. There are SOME vets out there that want to do surgery because of the money that they can make. Watch out for those...that's why I always suggest second and third opinions. Good luck!

| That's why I thought it strange that my regular vet never said anything, but this e-vet made a very big deal about it. I am planning on asking my regular vet about it, but I wanted to get some input from the experts first !!

| My Gracie was recently diagnosed. I was quoted about $4000 for all of the pre-op x-rays with anesthesia, surgery, orthopedic surgeon fees, etc. Big ouch, but bigger ouch for my baby girl!

On a positive note, this is not a condition that is life threatening. You don't HAVE to have it repaired until he starts showing signs of it becoming a real issue. You can wait it out without worrying about it endangering his health. Last edited by BamaFan121s; 12-05-2007 at 05:51 PM. | |

| Conner was diagnosed with LP. He is having surgery on 1/21. The cost is between $600 to $700 for one leg. Sometimes, he hops like a bunny when we go for walks. I am taking the rest of the week off of work to help him with his recovery (his surgery is on a Monday).
