| Lots of Questions (Long) Hi, I have a yorkie/mix?? little girl that I brought home from an abusive situation. Well, after caring for her for a few weeks, of course she is staying. She has our hearts, and fits in perfectly with our two Maltese boys. Lots of questions now- 1. Flea Meds: I put Advantix on her shortly after her first vet visit one month ago, I apply it in small drops along her spine as instructed by my vet, the next day I noticed a large patch of hair at the base of her tail looked like it had rubbed off. It was a large patch, a circle about 3 inches around. I am afraid to apply it again. Of course, I asked the vet, he swore it wasn't the Advantix and to go ahead and use it monthly. Should I put it on again? 2.Spaying and Dental:She has gained almost a pound and a half since I have had her, (Innova Small Bites), and now looks really healthy. Vet estimates her at 2-3 years old, and I want her spayed before her next heat. (my males are neutered), however, I am scared to death about the anesthesia. Anyone on here have a less than 3 pound dog that did okay with anesthesia? Anything special your vet did? Should I go to a vet school to have it done? 3.Grooming her is almost impossible. I took her in to a groomer initially and had her shaved (she was a smelly mess when I got her), but I can't get anywhere near her with a brush, let alone nail clippers or a toothbrush. Any ideas? I have lots questions, but this will do it for now. All help will be appreciated! 3puppies4me |

| Hi 3puppies4m3...congratulations on your new girl! I wouldn't use the Advantix again if it were me and I think I would even check with another vet. I've never used that brand. I saved this link a while back, it has the information you're looking for regarding anesthesia: http://www.shooterdog.com/alexfaq3.htm As for the grooming, just take it slow. Jo didn't like it at first but now he sits pretty still, he's only 7 months though. I find it easier to do his nails if someone holds him while I clip and we're still working on learning to brush...he's a tad bit touchy about his mouth since he started teething. |

| I would be afraid to use advantix again. My maltese hade a reaction to it. I use frontline on both of mine but I split the dose between my 2 dogs. She may also just be under stress. You might want to look at Missing Link to help build her health back up. It’s supplement, could help her with her hair loss. Read the testimonial page on the supplement and ask your vet about it. http://www.designinghealth.com/testi...stimonial.html Don't know what type brush you use but maybe you could try a different type brush. If she was abashed they may have hit her with a brush or something that resembles a brush in size. Try a Denman hair brush, they grip the hair and glide thru, doesn't pull the hair or hurt, my dogs love them. They feel really good to use and are really marketed for humans. You can buy them at some hair salons, beauty supplies or online. I first heard about them on another yorkie forum a few years ago I use a D81 http://www.denman-us.com/Denmanbrush/Cushion.htm As far as brushing her teeth my vet recommended taking a piece of panty hose and wrap it around the tip of your finger, apply doggie tooth paste & polish their teeth. It's really hard to get some dogs to accept a tooth brush, the tiny ones have such small mouths you may have more look using your finger. I believe isofluorane is the anesthesia thats suppose to be safer. There's another member on here whom 2 tiny yorkies & also has her own website with lots of info on tiny yorkies and health care http://www.mylittlemia.com/ . She may be able to help you with vet info or what to ask about concerning their health and spaying. Sounds like she needs some TLC. good luck with her.

| Some pets have reactions to flea and tick control, while others do not. Here is some research about reactions to the various and sundry products available: http://www.elversonpuzzle.com/biospotlettersv5.html I never used any of these products ON my babies prior to this month because we had always used granules in our lawn (an acre or so). This year we did not get it on in May when we normally did to catch the rainy season. If we needed more protection later we had our lawn sprayed. It is safe after it dries. There were never any reactions in many, many long years to our babies from placing these chemicals on the lawn and allowing the lawn to dry before they got on it again. The difference is, I suppose, is we are putting the same products directly on the little dogs and it is absorbed into their systems instead of it being placed on the lawns. We just got our lawn sprayed, so I don't believe I want to be putting this stuff on my baby again. Since we have been using the lawn chemicals for probably over 30 years with no reactions, I believe we'll continue with that regimen. Have you tried a baby's fingertip brush with the little one? That's a tool I start with as well as letting them hang out in the bathroom while I brush my teeth. They see you doing something, then sometimes they aren't so adverse to you using it on them. There used to be a product that was safe and I loved it. It was a treat, actually, called BONZ and they looked just like a steak bone - round with marrow in the center and they were hard and that's why her teeth were cleaned so well. (Not the same product on the market today called T-Bonz) My little chihuahua would chew on one of those every day and I never had to brush her teeth. Her teeth were as white the day she passed away as they were on the day she was born. When I got my last yorkie in 1991, I couldn't find them. I wish there was something like that available today... I can't help with the anesthesia question. I've never had one smaller than six pounds. |
