Scabbed All Over??! well, it's been about 1 month since I brought my little Jessie home from Maryland. When I picked him up, he appeared happy go lucky with no problems. the first week of him being home I got him groomed. The groomer said that he was an excellent behaved yorkie. however, she noticed that his entire forehead, under his chin and schnout area was covered in scabs. She pointed them out to me and it had an awful smell. I brought him to the vet and he said that it must of been from burdocks. Well, I only had him for a week I told my vet, he said that the dog has had this for quite sometime due to the amount of scabbing on him. putting it lightly it's just gross! The vet said to keep him on meds, which I've done for two weeks, I just brought him back he said to continue for another two weeks with the meds. I'm not so sure about this Dr. I feel my baby is just suffering. he seems like he's in good spirits but, he is stinky. no body wants to get too close because of the foul smell. Dr. said pay no mind. I think that smell is infection or something. has anyone ever had any problems like this with their yorkies, are there skin conditions for these dogs that anyone is familiar with? This Friday I'm taking my baby to another Dr. i'M just so frustrated & angry that my pooch is on all these medicines. Then he tells me that my dog has a Thyroid problem and puts him on meds for that with out taking a blood test...!!!!!!

| Poor baby. I don't really know anything about skin problems. My cocker had horrible allergies and smelled bad. I got so I didn't notice but everyone else did. The vet was never able to completely clear him up. Good luck

I'm glad you're taking him to another vet. Make sure they do a skin scraping to find out what is causing the scabs. Does he have any hair loss?

he'll probably will get some hair loss once scabs sloths off. I did notice that under his chin there is a giant scab the size of his chin coming off. it flaps away from his chin and you could see exposed skin. not good!

oh no, poor baby. I would definitely take him for a 2nd opinion. Is anyone is your home getting rashes or bites? I know a family that brought home this cute little puppy. And within 3 weeks the pup had scabs all over it. The lady went to the ER herself because she thought she was having an allergic reaction to something due to the rash all over her. The ER said it was Mange from the new puppy. They took the pup in and had a skin sample removed and tested and that's def what it was. I remember her saying in the end they shelled out over $800 between the doc visits for them and the vet visits. Also all the meds the family and the pup had to go on. In the end everything was ok. This was probably 6-7 years ago and they still have the dog. Not trying to scare you just a thought from seeing something scab related on a pup before.

You picked him up so you were able to see the place he came from. Did it seem clean? Were the dogs well cared for? I'm so glad you are taking him to a different vet. No way should the first one have put that baby on thyroid medication with out doing a thyroid panel. And if your puppy has a skin infection caused by a fungus, antibiotics can make it worse. Make sure this vet does a skin scraping to rule out mange.

Donating YT 30K Club Member | Definately get another opinion. My pom was diagnosed with a thyroid condition by extensive testing and put on meds. She continued withmeds withno results and then was diagnosed with Cushing's disease, but a lot of lab work was done in both cases

what do I do?!!!!! I just got back from vet. The doctor has no idea what this is without testing. scraping, fungal testing, allergy testing which could all run over $500. she suggested to do bathing treatments first. not sure what to do, we love our pet but, when she said that this could spread to my family. I have 4 children and I don't want to put them at risk. She said I should contact the dog rescue where I got him from.. perhaps they could work out some assistance or take him back.. I can't see returning him, it's not like he's a coat that I could just return because it doesn't fit. but I am so afraid of this cross contaminating to my family. I'm so confused and heart broken I need some advice, please help

My first yorkie, a rescue (Sweet, Precious Chester) was covered in scabs when I found him and stunk so terribly bad. Turns out he had a yeast infection, in every pore of his body. He also had a thyroid condition, but that was not the major cause. I'm trying my best to think of the special shampoo I used on him, I believe it started with an M - Malaceb, or something like that. It made the biggest difference; that, and Nutro food. He had to be bathed twice a day for a while, but it helped very quickly. Now, I know some people are going to freak at this one, but, he got that yeast infection again, only it was in his paws. I spent hundreds of dollars trying to cure it. I finally called my old country vet and asked her what to do. She said mix 1 part bleach to nine parts water and dip his paws in it. It was gone in a day. You certainly can't do this to his entire body, but keep it in mind for future reference. Smell his ears; do they smell sort of sickening sweet? That's a sure sign of yeast. Talk to the next vet about the possibility that's what it is. Don't give up. It will be worth hanging in there with him.

I know this sounds gross but Lulu had ringworm(yuk!!). I had to give her some antifungal medication and wash her twice a week with Malaseb shampoo that i got from my vet. The spot was on the back of her neck and it was huge, it was a real thick grey scab. It looked like a growth on her neck, i expected an alien or something to pop out of it. After a week of the meds and 2or3 weeks of the shampoo it went away. I would definetly recommend trying the shampoo. Didi

I didn't realize he was a rescue. Yes, contact the group and explain the situation. Hopefully they will help you with the vet bills, although he could have just as easily picked up a skin infection at the groomers if they aren't careful about sanitizing the equipment between clients. Some salons are downright dirty. I wouldn't bother with the allergy testing right now and that is probably the most expensive test, but you really need to find out if you are dealing with ringworm (fungus) or mange as it can be spread to humans. It will get very expensive if your whole family gets infected so it will be cheaper to go ahead and get your Yorkie tested now. I'm so sorry you are going through this.

Say a Prayer for Jessie well, driving home from the vet with Jessie was so NERVE WRACKING! all these thoughts were going thru my mind. o'my god how do I do this? what do I do? well, I just starting praying and letting everything go, when I got home I wrote to the President of the Yorkie Rescue and with in a 1/2 hr she called me. She said that she was so concerned with my email that it made her prority list. She said first off, if the dog had this problem and left the Fosters' house like this the dog shouldn't have been adopted out. 2nd, the dog would have to be removed from us and returned to the Fosters Parents to figure out how this could've happened and got passed their vets. they would refund my $. I explained to her that didn't matter, what does is my dog. We've already bonded and the dog has been with us for a month. So, my new vet gave me some medicated moisturized shampoo and omega 3 vitamins for the skin and LYM Dip. Whoww!! that stuff stinks like rotten easter eggs! bathe him once a week with the shampoo and then that smelly stuff. I pray to God that we don't have to return him. My heart would be broken . So please everyone, Keep us in prayer. This family would be heartbroken if we lost our Jessie

I am so glad the rescue group was so wonderful. I'll say many prayers that his skin clears up and he gets to stay with your family.
