HELP!! Puppy gained 1lb in 5 days! I went to visit friends for the holiday season and the puppy wasn't allowed to come and when I picked him up last night, he seemed much bigger. Which is just what I was afraid of... Anyway, I weighed him this morning-- .8 heavier than when I weighed him last Friday!!! I'm freaking out, because my last Yorkie was overfed by my father and ended up 12lbs and I really, really, want this one to be the right size. I think he was allowed to eat CAT FOOD at his LEISURE while I was gone... I said so many times to watch him and makes sure he had the right amount of food, from his cup, three times a day. WHY WOULD THAT BE SO TOUGH! For all I know, they gave him treats and people food, too. All that I know is my puppy gained almost a POUND in 5 days. Does anyone have any advice? I'm feeding him 1/4 of a cup of puppy food, strictly, now, which is only slightly less than what he was getting. Its important for him to get his nutrients, so diet food is a no go, correct? He's too small for a collar or harness, so I can't walk him. He weighed 1.8lbs when I left and now he weights almost 3lbs!! I'm losing my mind. His legs are still small, big tummy, of course. He is 13 weeks old and a day, btw. His mother weighed 3.5lbs and his father weighed 3lbs. He was a very petite baby boy. I'm taking him to the vet ASAP. I'm going to call everyone and see if anyone is open on Christmas Eve, but if not, I will wait. Someone help me!!!

| you can try lots of in door exercise, play ball and even get him to run around alittle in the house. i have a female who hates to go outside when it's cold or raniy and if you live in indy you just got lots of snow, so try to do more inside activities like tug rope and chasing his ball. mine always seem to put on alittle weight in the winter anyways but when spring comes they love to be out doors as much as possible unless its extremly hot then just in the evening when its cooled off abit. this sounds strange but we have a cemetary close by so we take them there so they can run as much as they want to and dont have to worry about leads or the road and they just love it there smelling everything and running ,in some spots the weeds are taller then they are and all you can see is them hopping up and down like rabbits its funny to watch them. so anyways just try the excercise and get him back to his regular diet im sure he will be ok after all he is a growing puppy. merry christmas lynne, mo macey abbey

I;m not sure but for a puppy that is growing I think this is normal grow spers. Chelsy grew like that. One week she was 2.4 the next week she was 3.00 pounds. It starts to smoth off in a while. But they do grow fast when they are puppies. I would not be worried but concered about the cat food YES.

Relax......Puppies grow in spurts. He may only gain an ounce this week. My Higgins gained a half pound in a week. Just go back to feeding him what you normally do, and give him a little extra exercise. "Grandparents" will spoil the grandpuppies! As long as it is only for a week, he'll do fine...... Mary Ellen

He should be okay, but a big tummy usually means he's eaten quite well. Keep him on a strict diet, and take him for long walks or play with him a lot indoors. Welcome to YorkieTalk!

puppy You have been given good advise..don't worry. I let my pups eat all they want all day if need be. He will only be the size he is gentically programmed to be anyway...of course we can feed too many treats/ calories and make them overweight, but you can not make a 3 pound frame turn into a 12 pound frame by feeding them too much. Double his 12 week weight..and if he is a bit too pudgy from puppy fat it will level off anyway...

i understand youre concern, i have to watch my yorkie like a hawk because the stupid people in me family (dont get me wrong, i love them, but they overstep their bounds when it comes to my baby) feed him, i caught my brother feeding him ice cream and cookies (after i specifically said NO people food) AND my uncle put my puppy down right in front of the cat dish and nudged him closer (I WAS STANDING RIGHT THERE AND PROTESTING AND ALMOST YELLING AT HIM) anyways, enough said, family feels that it is their job to offer whatever the puppy/child might want or be lacking at home.... as for the weight he gained, it is not uncommon for yorkies to end up much bigger than their parents, and my yorkie gained a little less than one pound in one week (and he was home with us the whole week, no family whatsoever), its probably just a normal puppy growth spurt, oh and i know if he has been dewormed recently that can cause the stomach to "bloat" somewhat.... just give him lots of exercise indoors and next time find someone who will STICK to youre schedule and instructions and not deviate from it.... but it is frustrating isnt it? i have gotten SEVERE backlash from my brothers fiance because i yelled at her for nto doing what i said when it came to my baby....... good luck

i think that's a normal growth spurt. Archie was like 5 lbs when we got him (3 months ago) and now he's 10 lbs. And he hardly ever eats. Archie goes to his girlfriend Zelda's house next door, and there are 3 cats there and I've caught him eating dry cat food when I went to pick him up even though the neighbors INSIST that they keep him away from it. You can't really trust people, especially when my dog came home and puked. But I find that Archie generally doesn't like cat food because it's got fish in it and he hates fish. I heard somewhere though that dogs can eat cat food but cats can't eat dog food. But...cat food is really fattening to dogs because it's pure meat with loads of calories which is what makes it more appetizing for them.

lickthestar........ that info is false, cats can most certainly eat dog food... its pretty funny because my cats prefer dog food over their cat food ...... then aagain toby will eat anything, i took him to petsmart today and i set him on the counter coz the checker wanted to see him, and he pretended to go towards her, then he made a sharp right into the open dog treat bowl!!!! well the checker laughed and said "thats all right" and picked him out one fo the treats...... he pushed the treat she set down in front of him with his nose, he pushed it back towards the checker and went for the whole bowl of treats, almost as if to say "since im so nice you can keep this ONE, and ill take the whole bowl, arent i nice???" it was pretty funny,........ but i dont see why he is such a food hound... he always gets fed, and he always gets fed enough, its nto like hes starving!!!!

If you want to walk him and can't find a dog harness small enough, look at the ferret or cat harnesses. That is were I got Rudy one when he was a baby. It was like a harness and leash in one...............Cindy

I tried the cat harness/break-away colar, but not the ferret one. I'll have to check it out next visit to the pet store; thanks!

He's fed 3-4 times a day at present. He's a lot smaller than the other Yorkie puppies and a lot smaller than my first two Yorkies. I'm hoping for anything under 7lbs, as the first two turned out HUGE. (Due mostly to overfeeding) Poor Maddie is a stuffed sausage.
