Default licking hair off of feet, all four

We have a Yorkie, 9 years old and he's started incessantly licking his feet to the end of having no hair left on them. We tried a 2 sprays to little effect. After a day or so it had no effect on him. We had him spayed about 6 months ago partly due to a problem with his losing hair. The vet felt spaying might reverse the hair loss. It didn't, but his hair is slowly coming back to its fullness. Here's a link to a YouTube video of Rocky and me last Xmas, before any thinning of his hair. We're really going nuts about the foot licking thing and this is our last option before taking him in and incurring unpredictable expense chasing the allergy dragon, so if anyone has any experience with this malady, please let us know. He nmay have developed a food allergy, what are you feeding him? Foot licking is a classic sign of the problem.
Before you go thru the expensive testing I would change his food.

Good luck!

Footlicking/biting is a red flag symptom of an allergy - it's usually what tells the vet that an allergy is going on and becoming symptomatic. Have you changed his food over the past year? What is he currently eating? Welcome to YT, I hope you come back bc there is a lot of info on allergies!

Yes, what are you feeding? That sounds like the problem. My Yorkie is sitting in a chair right now scratching and biting herself like crazy because she got into food with corn in it again. This will go on for awhile now.

Charlie is 10 and came to live with me in April, 07. He chewed his paws and a swab test by the vet discovered a yeast infection. Prescribed medicated shampoo helped him stop chewing. Also, Charlie's hair was very thin and a full blood panel also discovered that his thyroid was at -0-. A Soloxine (thyroid medication) twice a day has put his coat back to growing.

Good luck.

What made you or the vet think yeast infection? like are there any other visible symptoms i could look for to mention to my vet? because louie has this paw licking habit real bad, and he sometimes nibbles on his side causing hot spots.

What are you feeding him? That could be the key right there...

I haven't been on the site since before xmas and I seldom check my yahoo email so I was surprised to find so many responses to the few comments that I had made. What a great community, I feel bad having neglected an old friend like that. I'll try and do better this year.

Rocky's hair has thickened back up but he's still chewin' his feet to our great displeasure. It's not as bad as it was but how good is that?

my cat is 14 years old and has been doing the same thing for years off and on. Once in a while he licks and chews the area around his "wrists" and belly to the point of baldness. Then it just goes away and the hair grows back. Then a few months or years later he's back at it. I have never figured out why he does it.
