| Went to Vet....I am Freaking Out, Please help! Hi everyone....I need your help, advice and information.... For the past 2 days Tini was favoring one leg and not always putting weight on it. It is her back left leg. I haven't stepped on her little paw in a very long time and am not aware of her falling off anything recently so I waited to see if it would stop and maybe she had stepped on something. So after deciding I didn't care if anyone thought I was crazy, I took her to the vet. The vet examined her and Tini was fine until the vet stretched out her leg all the way. Then she yelped. I almost cried. The vet said she may have jumped off something when I wasn't looking and hurt herself, but that is unlikely since she doesn't mind her leg being touched at all. The vet thinks it might be legg calves perthes and wants me to have Tini have an xrays next Thursday under anesthesia to find out for sure. For now, she gave me a prescription pain killer/anti-inflammatory called Rimadyl. She also wants Tini on rest, ie no running jumping or playing until she goes in next Thursday I was looking on the internet and if this is what Tini has I am going to freak out. I can't bear to think of her having to have surgery. I also can't believe the timing since I am going back to work full time on the 25th. I have been just a wreck all night. I know I can count on everyone here to understand my feelings right now. I am so scared and now I don't know what to expect. Does anyone know anything about this? What can I do/ what shoudl I do? Help! Thanks!

| Make sure you get a second opinion from another vet before doing this procedure. I will always get a second opinion from now on since what happened to my chewy! believe me its worth in the end! |

| I'd get a second opinion, too. There are a couple YT members who have gone through LCP surgery successfully with their babies. Good luck. I hope Tini and you both feel better soon.

| I"d say to get the x-rays and show them to a couple differnet doctors. Second (and maybe even third) opinions might give you a couple other options. My thoughts are with the both of you. Keep us posted! |

| Someone here Someone here has a pup with that problem, cannot remember their name, I am sure that they will eventually respond. I too would get a second opinion and as far as that medication, I may be wrong but I thought there was some controversy over it, check on the internet. |

| I just checked on the net and there are lots of sites regarding this med and its sometimes deadly side effects. the following is one of the sites, also, there is a group called Barks that is campaigning against this medication. Please check it out before your pup takes this. http://www.pgaa.com/canine/health/rimadylwarning.html |

| I would also try and find a vet that will do the x rays without anesthesia.. It can be done.. at least try first before having her put under. The surgery is very successful and they fully recover and have a normal life afterwards.. In my area it is around $600 per hip. Keep us updated.

| I am going to call the vet now and find out if there is something else Tini can take besides the Rimadyl. Keep the info and advice coming. Thanks everyone! Tini and I really appreciate your help. I love Yorkie Talk!

Yorkie Kisses are the Best! Donating Member | I'm so sorry to hear this - Could it be LP ? The Rimadyl is a little controversial - you may want to check further into that before saying yes - there are reports of dogs dying after taking it - But...like someone already said - I would get a second opinion on this before acting - GOOD LUCK !!! |

| Thanks for the kind words everyone.....I talked to the vet today. Tini is not taking the Rimadyl....too risky...besides she is not acting like she is in pain. She is resting a bunch and is supposed to stay off her feet, so I have just been cuddling with her and holding her and carrying her wherever I go. When I am not holding her, she is in the crate (which she is not thrilled about) which is the only way I can keep her off her feet. The vet has agreed that we will try to take the xrays first without the anesthesia, but since Tini squirms around so much this may not work. I am glad the vet is working with me and at least to me she is not acting like I am totally crazy. Who cares what she really thinks. I think better safe than sorry. I hope someone out there posts who has had their dog go through the surgery, I have been reading the internet and don't really know what to think. It says the recovery period can be months...I hope not. Poor Tini. Thanks everyone for your advice and support. Tini is happing knowing all her YT pals are thinking of her.

As far as Rimadyl goes, I do not know anything about it, but I'm sure there is a different painkiller that your baby can take. My old Basset Hound Charlie hurt his leg several times and the vet gave me Metacam. "Metacam (meloxicam) is a non-steroidal anti-inflammatory (NSAID) oral suspension for use for the treatment of pain and inflammation in dogs." It worked well for Charlie. You give it to them in their mouth. Charlie liked the taste and after a dose or two, he seemed like he wasn't in any pain at all. Maybe you could ask your vet about that. Does anyone else know if their are any risks with this medication? I hope I helped. Good luck with you furbaby. You and Tini are in my prayers. | |

| I have posted this several times, but I think it should be posted again for Tini. It is a prayer to St. Francis of Assissi. PRAYER FOR OUR ANIMAL FRIENDS (To make a Novena for a sick pet, say this prayer for 9 consecutive days) Heavenly Father, our human ties with our friends of other species is wonderful and special gift from You. We now ask You to grant our special animal companions your Fatherly care and healing power to take away any suffering they have. Give us, their human friends, new understanding of our responsibilities to these creatures of Yours. They have trust in us as we have in You; our souls and theirs are on this earth together to give one another friendship, affection, and caring. Take our heartfelt prayers and fill Your ill or suffering animals with healing Light and strength to overcome whatever weakness of body they have. (Here mention the names of the animals needing prayer) Tini Your goodness is turned upon every living thing and Your grace flows to all Your creatures. From our souls to theirs goodness flows, touching each of us with the reflection of Your love. Grant to our special animal companions long and healthy lives. Give them good relationships with us, and if You see fit to take them from us, help us to understand that they are not gone from us, but only drawing closer to You. Grant our prayer through the intercession of good St. Francis of Assisi, who honored You through all Your creatures. Give him the power to watch over our animal friends until they are safely with You in eternity, where we someday hope to join them in giving You honor forever. Amen. |

| jogi37, I'm very sorry about what is going on with tiny. My niece has this disease and my cousin know's how you feel. The best thing you can do, is not let tiny running or play. As this cause her more pain and swelling. In time her blood with start flowing again. It's just take at 1 to 2 years for it to fully flow again. In the meantime, try keeping tiny on full bed rest. So her outcome is better. If you need more info do not hesitate to write back.
