| Conner Needs Surgery We went to the vet today for Conner's kennel cough shot, and he had blood taken to test for lyme. I told the vet how he hops like a bunny sometimes when we go for our walks. He checked Conner's legs and said they were very strong, then he checked his knees. One knee goes in and out of the socket. He recommended surgery. He said the grooves where the knee socket is located are not deep enough. He will make them deeper. He said the surgery will be about 1 1/2 hours. I drop him off in the morning, and can pick him up between 3 and 3:30 p.m. They will send him home with pain meds. He has his surgery on January 8th. I will take the rest of the week off to be home with him.

| Bella has a luxating patella also. I might get a second opinion. Yorkies are known to have this problem. My vet said that as long as she didnt have pain he would not put her thru the surgery. The good thing is you have plenty of time to investigate your options. My vet told me to walk Bella uphill to strenghten the muscles around the knee to help hold everything in place. Maybe you could try this. Of course we dont have any hills in FL....so i use a treadmill. Bella does not limp or act like she is in pain. I am not sure if your baby does. I would definately so my research first!! Good luck |

| Is your vet talking about LP? I don't know much about it, but Gizmo and I send Conner lots of hugs. Please keep us updated. Poor baby!

| His vet is very experienced in this surgery. He was popping Conner's knee in and out of the socket. The vet said he will definitely need the surgery. I could wait if I wanted to, but I just want to get it over with. He recommended we wait until after the holidays when things slow down a bit and we can spend a lot of time with Conner. He is not in pain. He vet said when he is walking and it pops out he feels a pulling of the muscle.

| I went thru that surgery with my Rebel and I'm so glad it's over! He came thru like a champ and the hardest part was trying to keep him from overusing the leg afterwards. Good luck with Conner. I'm sure he'll be fine.

| Sorry, to hear Conner needs surgery. We also went through this with Gracie, my eight year old. She had both knees done when she was a year old. She healed nicely both times. We paid about 1000.00 each knee. Now, a couple of months ago, her vet said that the left knee was loose Be sure to have Conner swim in the bath tub.... This is great physical therapy. Wishing Conner all the best!!!

| The vet said Conner hops when the knee comes out. He feels the pulling, then it goes back and he walks normal. The vet felt his legs and said they were strong. Then he checked his knees, and that's when he was able to pull the knee in and out of the socket.

Phantom Queen Morrigan Donating Member | hi Sorry to hear Connor has a luxating patella. Its nice to know that your vet has done them before but let me tell you this is an invasive procedure and should be treated as such. I work for an orthopedic surgeon and we do this surgery numerous times a day. Its painful and our patients are on heavy pain meds during and after surgery. They do NOT go home the same day and have to stay over night with a pressure bandage on to reduce swelling and bruising. I can't stress enough the pain meds that dogs should get for these surgeries if they are able to have them (no heart problems or other serious issues). It always worries me when i read here about dogs going in for same day surgeries (unless its a spay or neuter). Also make sure you get a full blood panel done before surgery to rule out any other problems. And also make sure he goes over all the aftercare your going to need to do before the surgery so your prepared. good luck!
