| General health question? I'm not yet a yorkie mom, but I've been reading up (here and other sites) on them because I've been wanting one for about two years now but havne't made the purchase because of financial and time constraints. I'll be doen with grad school next year, so I should be able to devote more time to a pup. But enough about me. Are yorkies generally healthy? What are the most common ailments? Any info would be helpful. |

| The key to getting a healthy yorkie is to find a reputable breeder with healthy dogs. A good breeder will know their lines, have them tested for genetic issues, and will only breed genetically healthy dogs. If you buy from a petstore, puppymill, or backyard breeder - there is a lot more chance of you getting a dog that will have health problems down the road. Luxating patellas and Liver Shunt are genetic diseases that are common in yorkies. So far as just general health - my Lacy has been a very healthy dog. She's three years old and the only problems she has had have been an eye infection and a bladder infection. And of course the occasionally just "not feeling well"..diarrhea and vomiting...but that never lasts long. Good Luck in your yorkie search and welcome to YT! It's great that you're doing research before you bring a new baby home

| Excellent post MyFairLacy! Just make sure you buy from a reputable breeder that knows her lines extremely well. Someone that tests for liver shunt, luxating patellas, etc. If for whatever reason, the dog ends up sick, a good breeder will be there for you. I purchased from someone who pretended to be a good breeder, and I later found out that she was actually a broker for puppymills. My dog was very sick from day one, and he has pretty severe liver problems that are congenital...We have had to deal with lots of health problems because we didn't buy from a reputable breeder. I wouldn't trade him for anything in the world though. He is like our 1st child and we love him more than anything!!

| My dog has been really healthy... but you end up spending some money preventatively or if they get into something they shouldn't. Like he had a high bile acid test - nothing came from it but I wanted to take him through whatever it took financially to get an answer (other than cutting him open). A lot of times it is how far you want to take something (try over the counter stuff v. prescription stuff) also. If you can clean their ears yourself v. paying the vet to do it, if you can clip your dog v. having a groomer do it, etc... that kind of stuff can add up too. |

| I've been blessed with very healthy ones, but they can have a lot of leg and liver problems. I think almost every breed of dog has traits of illnesses you just have to research. You can search luxating patella, and live shunts on this site and you'll find a lot of information. Welcome to YT.

| Good for you for doing your research! I'm not yet a Yorkie mom either, but I have finally put down a deposit on my boy and am going into this motherhood with my head on my shoulders and research under my belt! I hope you get a Yorkie! It will be a great experience! |
