Phantom Queen Morrigan Donating Member | dog tears and saliva have a chemical in them that turns their fur red. Dogs that tear alot have tear stains on their face and dogs that chew at their paws have red/orange tinted feet too. The tears are actually clear but when they dry they leave red stains

| The red comes from a type of fungus/yeast that grows in the moist hair from the tearing. The tears themselves aren't really red. |

| I agree with that. The constantly wet hair is a perfect place for microbes to grow. You might want to talk to your vet about possible antibiotic treatment. You also need to clean the area every day and dry it. There are also products you can sprinkle on their food that are supposed to help with tear staining. You also want to feed a diet without any dyes in it as dyes from the food can cause tear stains as well. Also minerals in water can contribute to tear staining. I've heard of maltese breeders giving their dogs distilled water to drink.

| I always heard it was iron that caused the red color. Zoey has a reddish tint to her eye boogies! I will ask the vet to check for yeast at her next checkup!
