| Help! Fleas! Several weeks ago my 10-month old Yorkie picked up fleas - evidently he went under one bush too many on our walks. Anyway, by the time they were discovered they had spread all over him. I went out and bought the quickest thing I could find (it was late one night) - Hartz 4-in-1 from the supermarket. It was for dogs 4-17 lb (he is 4.4). I put it on his neck and down his spine as directed (works like Frontline, Advantix etc.) and he immediately vomited - within minutes. He then proceeded to become less and less active for a couple of days and vomited on and off. On Monday I called the vet, who said to wash the Hartz off, let him recover then come in and get shampoo. On Tuesday, despite being bathed, he was still ill and the vet's office (vet was on vacation) said to take him to the emergency vet clinic - but we did get him to eat and within a day he was fine. So I got the shampoo (Myconex - "Top of the line" the vet said) and left it on 10 minutes as directed. But the fleas were still there. I had to spray this puppy flea spray from petco on him constantly (pyrethins). I sprayed, vacuumed, washed in the house, and not it's gotten quite cold (58) in the house...but they were still there. I was bitten to death too. The vet finally agreed to give me a systemic (he said since he'd reacted badly to the Hartz he didn't want to give him Frontline etc.) so he gave me Protocall, told me to use half a tube. When Sargie didn't have a reaction they told me to put the other half on the next day. I did - but he still had fleas. He was away from three days in the pet hotel and when he came home still had them (as he has never gotten them there, these had to be eggs on him that hatched whilst he was there) - evidently Protocall doesn't kill eggs. I have sprayed and bathed him with the shampoo since and seem to have made quite a dent in the flea population but this a.m. I found another one on his head, although he had no other signs - no flea dirt, etc. - anywhere. Does anyone have any hints for what works? Several people I work with - with different breeds - say that Advantix, Frontline etc. aren't even working as well as they did. Are the fleas becoming immune? My cousin emailed me that putting natural yeast in the dog's food - once he's rid of them - will prevent a reoccurence - it worked for all her animals. Anyone heard of this? |

| I have used all kinds of things on Murfee. When I had him on Revollution,he didn't have fleas....ever, but my old vet changed him to frontline plus. He has fleas but someone told me to give him a bath in Dawn detergent (the original kind) and guess what...you can actually watch the fleas die and fall off. It doesn't keep them from coming back when he goes outside. The new vet I stopped by the other day said that the Adams flea spray is not harmful and to spray some on his tummy and legs every time he went out to keep them from getting on him. If they are in your house you are going to have to bomb your house too and it would help to spray your yard. We have fleas in the yard even tho hubby sprayed but I've heard that fleas are horrible this year. Good luck |

| Please never use Hartz products. They are very dangerous. If you use Program, it won't kill the fleas but it will cause them to not be able to reproduce. I think it is pretty safe and you can use it with other products that kill the adults.

| Never use hartz. Their flea shampoos and preventatives are dangerous and dogs have died after using them. Bathe him with dawn dishsoap then put a preventative like frontline on. You will probably need to bomb your house too my quess is their in your carpet

| thanks! I just got to reading - thanks to everyone for the input - Sargie appears to be flea free now, from the Zodiac spray, and I think the cold and Sargent natural spray has killed the fleas in the house, as he has not had any more lately (nor have I!) (I have birds and fish and it would be difficult to bomb the house - and my vet told me that wouldn't work, to buy this Bayer stuff from Lowe's and spray and vacuum it - of course at Lowe's they didn't know what I was talking about). They really are a plague...I just saw several other threads on fleas, and people complaining about Hartz...I never would've used it if my vet had been in town! But this Protocall, which he gave me, has anyone ever heard of it??? I will get Advantix next time. Thanks for the Dawn dish soap advice - original Dawn, no other kind, right? Thanks again! And Sargie thanks you. |

| Last night I found fleas on Reece and Soleil...I immediately lathered them up in Dawn dishsoap and left it on for about 10 mins and when I rinsed them off..dead fleas were falling in the sink...I back that up today with some Frontline spray...and so far we are flea free (try saying that 10 times fast lol) and this should last a month or two!! Dawn (not the dishsoap hehe) |

| The fleas are terrible I also use Frontline plus and two out of my three got fleas and C J is the worst one. I bought a flea comb and have been using it plus Frontline. I never heard of using Dawn I use it one my flowers during the growing season to kill off bugs. But I never heard of using it on the dogs for fleas. Thanks. My vet said this was the worst year for fleas and especially since it was so dry here. Our winters hasn't been cold enough to kill the bugs off.

| I personally wouldn't use Zodiac flea products either. There have been problems/lawsuits from Zodiac just like with Hartz. All the over the counter flea control products can be dangerous. It is best to get your flea control only from your vet or a licensed online pharmacy to be safe, places like Dr. Fosters and Smith, Petmeds.com, etc. Don't buy them from retail stores like PetEdge, etc. as counterfeit flea products have shown up at the retail level according to the EPA. |

| I believe it 'bout a bad year for fleas! Fortunately, Sargie didn't have a reaction to the Zodiac spray, which is for puppies, not dogs - like he did to the other. As I wrote, my vet did give me what he called "top of the line" shampoo and, when I complained that that didn't help, Protocall, which worked not much better - I also read on one of the Yorkietalk threads that someone said they would never use flea shampoo on a Yorkie, because it's full of chemicals -'tis very difficult to know what to do. Guess this Dawn dish detergent advice is the best, though I'm sure it dries their skin and does it damage their hair??? Must be gentle though - they use it on those ads to get the oil out of the bird feathers when they're caught in oil spills! With hope these fleas are history and that I can now concentrate on the BIG thing (interrupted by the danged bugs), further toilet training for my little pup! Thanks again for all the input - Sargie and CS |

| Dawn is great and very safe. Dilute it 50/50 with water, then put it on a dry dog. Lather it and let it sit for as long as your dog will take it. |
