| gaining weight and other advice on rescue adoption We just adopted a rescue yorkie. He's very sweet and has had a hard life from day one of being born in a puppy mill. Since then he's been shifted from home to home to home. We are his 5th home since he was born and he's only about 6 months old. My first question - he's tall, but very skinny. At his size, he looks like he should easily weigh at least 12-13 lbs, but he's only 9 lbs and his tummy goes in. You can see his ribs a lot. I think he's always going to be lanky, but he does need to gain some weight. How should we do this? Second question - How can we get Chip to like him more? As of now, Chip is really is not liking the idea that he's there. Smokey (the new pup) wants to be friends and Chip is mad at us. HELP!

| How long have you had him? Chip will probably come around after awhile and like him. He is probably still just getting used to him being there. As for the weight gain, I would put him on a high quality food and feed him a bit more than the bag suggests until he gains enough weight.

| Is there any vitamin supplement I can get him to help? We've had him since last night.

| First off when you take in a Foster, you should never let it be close to your own dogs untill it's been Vet. checked and had all the shots, stools checked for parisites and so on. He should be kept as far away from your own dogs for a specific amount of time to see if he develops anything such as kennel caugh. Don't try and get your own dog/s to accept him. Just get him all the midical attention he needs in order to get adopted out. Just keep him clean and feed him several small meals a day till he gets use to a different and better diet. |

| He has already been thoroughly checked by the rescue lady's vet and has had all his vaccinations.

| Im sure once he is on a really good diet or even some homecooked food he will start to gain weight..it does take time though..also your guy will eventually be used to this stranger in the house...before you know it they will be bestest friends!! |

| Since he's been vet checked I would think time, love and a well balanced diet will put the weight on before you know it. From what I have read on YT it takes time for the furbaby who already lives there to get use to the new comer. Playing with them together on the floor and sharing some little treats between them may be a barrier breaker. I would not leave them alone for some time until they are certain of each other. Good luck and bless you for rescueing that little one. |

| My little guy is named Chip too! Anyway Chip was pretty much in the same boat when he was adopted from a rescue, super skinny and under 10lbs. He gained alot of weight just by eating regularly, and now has evened out at 15lbs. I wouldn't recommend giving him extra heapings of food to gain the weight, it may be too much for his body to handle. Regular feedings and with time he will gain some weight. As for the relations, don't force it they will establish their own terms on their own. |

| Everyone has been saying that soon they'll be best friends but just the betrayed look that Chip gave me this morning killed me. I've been trying not to cry all day lol. We've been watching them together and letting them do their thing. There has been a couple "fights" but Chip never actually bit him and Smokey thought he was playing. I'm going to introduce Smokey in a minute!

| Super that you have a adopted a mill rescue. We've had our little mill rescue for two years already. We also haveour female who is 11yrs. and our little boy who is 7yrs. We took them with us to pick up our little guy so it was neutral ground. Once home it took time but I made sure that all three received the same amount of attention. Also once the pecking order is straightend out and your chip doesn't feel like he's not top dog anymore things should come around. But it does take time, but certainly worth it. I applaud you for adopting a mill dog and hope he's in his furever home. Best of luck. |

| We weighed both Chip and Smokey at Petsmart. Chip is a whooping 8.1 lbs and Smokey, who is ginormous compared to Chip is only 7.7 lbs. The vet tech there recommended us trying missing link and mixing his dry food with some wet food to help him gain a little. Smokey really looks like he could easily be 12 lbs when he's up to the weight he should be. I love my lil teapots!

| Is he malnourished? If so, try Rebound. It is very high in calories and provides all of the vitamins and nutrition that a dog needs. This is what I have always used for the rescues that are underweight due to not being fed properly. You can get it at your vet's office or order it online. You can use it as a liquid diet supplement for a sick dog but in your case, I would mix it into his food. It will help put weight on him, increase his appetite, and give him the vitamins he needs.
