| Which is it? Hi all, I have heard such conflicting opinions on whether or not it is OK to feed only kibble without any wet food. Lucy has never had wet food and I never fed wet to my German Shepherds... Thoughts?

Furbutts = LOVE Donating Member Moderator | It's okay to feed just kibble. But, usually, "wet" foods are bit higher quality bc they are "one step" less processed than dry (which is totally processed). Also, if you're feeding a high-protein kibble, lots of times it's good to add wet bc higher protein causes increased needs for hydration. Wet food is a good way to add more moisture to their diet in general too.

| It won't hurt a dog to eat all kibble. It won't hurt to feed all wet. It won't hurt to feed a little of both. It is whatever you want to do but wet food is less processed so I like it better. There is also no evidence that I have found saying that kibble cleans teeth.

| I would never feed kibble anymore. I think canned is a lot better because kibble is so overprocessed and the canned has the moisture they need. I'm really not crazy about any commercial pet food. Lacy's on a raw diet

| I heard that wet food is bad for their teeth and that kibble helps clean their teeth...any truth to that?

| No. You wouldn't expect to eat cookie/crackers and have them clean your teeth would you? The grains in the kibble (and canned) are mostly what build up and cause plaque on the teeth. No matter what you feed, it's essential to brush your dog's teeth regularly to keep them clean and healthy

Furbutts = LOVE Donating Member Moderator | I would just gently caution you to remember that all health care is an ART, not just a science. What a vet recommends could mean everything, or it could mean nothing - and all the shades in between. That is why one has to educate themselves, and not just take another human being's recommendation on blind faith in their diploma on the wall. I'm a nurse and we have a joke in the medical field that goes like this: "What do you call the person who graduates at the bottom of their medical school class?" ...."A DOCTOR!!" ...just bear that in mind....the same goes with all vets, and all 'experts' of anything, for that matter.

Anyway though...even recommendations from vets with vary from vet to vet. And you don't learn squat about nutrition in vet school. I think Hills is going to give us a little lecture on small animal nutrition our second year...and yeah, that's about it. Most vets just don't know much about the best food for dogs

| A vet admitted to me that anyone who has done more than 2 hours of research into their dogs diet knows more than most vets. I guess it completly depends on the person, of course its OK to feed only dry commercial food, if to you ok means yes they will survive. Will they like their food? Adore it? Thrive? Thats another issue alltogether.

| Thanks for all of the input For those who feed raw, what is a good starting point of books, information available, etc..should I decide to go down that path?

We're going raw too - Marcel's nutritionist is having us start w/ the venison freeze-dried-raw medallions first, then progress to the patties if he does fine. I started the freeze-dried and they are CRAZY for them!
