| He better not bite this time Mommy's staying I just spoke to Buddy's new groomer and she will allow me to stay with him this time. Auntie Jane (her name) said she has never allowed this but will make an exception this time because I am so concerned that Buddy bit her last time. I am so releived. He may still have to be muzzled but I will be there with him. I'll die if he tries to bite when I'm there. She said groomer's never tell the owner's when they are bitten, can a groomer tell me why? I should have asked but didn't. Auntie Jane said she believes owners should be told and be aware of this. I agree but wonder why groomer's feel the need not to tell. Any groomer's out there who don't tell and why? |

| I think it's great that she's allowing you to stay. I have no idea why a groomer wouldn't tell you something like that, but I wanted you to know that I am sending out good thoughts for a great grooming experience this time.

| What I don't understand is why groomers don't like the owners staying there while they groom their pets. I hate to sound pessimistic, but it's almost like they have something to hide. When I took Darla in for her first "happy" visit (bath and nail clip only), I stayed. The groomer wasn't upset, but I could tell she was taken aback a little. What the hell, she had a couch and I sat on it! On the other hand, I was a hairdresser for years. Some people would bring their children in and they were so awful, I made the parents leave. After they were gone, I put the fear of God into the kids and they were such angels Could it be it's the same with dogs? |

| i know from when i used to bring Layla to Petsmart... if she was able to see me... she was trying her best to get OFF the table... so i'm sure it is dangerous because all they want is to be with their moms.... and maybe too many people too little room??? i'm not sure.. but i just do it myself now. |

| I've been grooming for over 15 years and when I worked for a large grooming shop they didnt allow owners to stay citing that it causes the dog to get excited and it is harder to groom them. Some owners like to talk to their dogs and the dog will get excited and may try to leap off the table or wont hold still and can get cut. All valid points however.... When I finally was able to open my own shop I decided that I wanted to try a different approach. I set my shop up so they owner could sit on one side of the counter and I faced my grooming table so the dog didnt look at the owner. Also I groom one on one so no other dog was in the shop while I groomed. Each dog got personal attention and I groomed them from start to finish with no caging. Typically they were in and out within an hour. In all the years I groomed I can honestly say I was NEVER bitten nor do I muzzle. I groomed all breeds for 10 years and only smaller breeds the last 5. However, I always told the owner if their dog needed some training on grooming procedures and would definately tell if a dog would have bit me! One reason groomers dont tell owners is b/c all bites have to be reported to animal control. If they do your dog goes into quarintine (could be your home but depending on severity of bite animal control could take them). Another reason is some groomers dont want to admit they were bit and cant handle your dog. I always tell owners - ask questions, know your groomer and if u ever feel like something is wrong talk to your groomer and if you dont feel u got an honest answer go elsewhere.

| Simplyyorkies, I thank you for your honest response. All of that makes so much sence. I wish you were closer because that is exactally the kind of groomer I think everyone is looking for. Go in, wait, leave. It just dosen't happen around here. However, this new groomer, I believe to be really very professional, sweet and caring. Maybe with Buddy getting older he got annoyed at something but it was upsetting because he has never reacted that way in the past. I will let her muzzle him, for both their protection but I will be there to see that he does not get stressed. If he does, than I really hate to stop using her, he never looked so good and start up again myself. Thank you again, |

| My guess is, they don't tell the owner, because the owner might start to wonder what they did to the dog to make the dog bite If there is a three strike law in your area, after 3 bites, they have to be put down. so many may not tell because they love dogs, and realize that under certain conditions a dog might bite, but that does not make them a vicious dog. |

Awwww thank you Villette. If he were smaller it wouldn't be so bad but being larger he can give some bite if he wanted to. I'm gonna kick his butt to China if he does it again. Grooming date is 081807.

| groomer I was a Yorkie groomer..anyone find it hard to believe there was a need for a groomer who only did ONE breeder? LOL and I groomed 5 days per week for many years...I had what I referred to as a "Yorkie Spa"...they got the full treatment and people wanted it!! I have been bitten..it was always for a reason, stresssed, scared, nervous, high strung and one who may not have been treated well before the new owner got it. I would tell the owner the York did not like grooming, but that was my job and we always worked it out..I saw no need to point out every nip I got...the dog did not bite out of meanness..just fear or stress...it took time to become friends. Sometimes it took a few months for them to learn to trust me, but they all finally did..Yorks know who has their back... The only reason I did not like the owner staying, was the fact they are like children and act up in front of mom...get them alone and we had a nice visit..if they were stressed from the car ride, I could let them play in the playyard for 30 mins or take them for a walk to settle down...most owners would be so upset that their York bit me that I kept it to myself knowing in a few months it would be a thing of the past..and always was... Truthfully, most of my bites came from stud service bitches...and she was always trying to bite the male, not me, but I would put up my hand to protect him and I got the teeth...muzzles can be a necessity with "bitchy" bitches...JMO... |

Pat, thank you for telling me that. I know there are many reasons for a dog biting but when it's your own and you are a responsible owner it causes much concern. I do trust her but her business is a very busy one, who's in the tub, who's barking on the table or barking from a crate. Auntie Jane does all her own grooming and is very professional and has been in the business for 14yrs. I have only been there twice having just found her. I am very glad she will allow me to stay while he is muzzled. I don't think I will allow him to see me but be there in case he is stressed. We'll see how it goes. Everyone wants the perfect well behaved kids and well behaved dogs all the time. I guess that's just dreaming.

| When is Buddy's appointment??? I want to keep my fingers crossed that day. I've found this thread interesting as I've often wondered the same thing. Recently, several of my friends have begun taking their dogs to a guy about 45 minutes from here...He encourages them to stay, and the trip is worth it. I called, and the next appt. wasn't for 45 days! LOL, I'm not that patient, so I talked to my vet. They put me in touch with a woman who is only 20 minutes away and who also invites the owners to stay! We've only been there once (and now that I've shaved Ginger, only Bernie goes next time), but what a great experience!!! I think all groomers should make this an option. Now, I have to admit, Ginger is somewhat, ummm....highstrung. So, after a bit, I stepped outside so that she would stop trying so hard to get to me. But I did that on my own and stayed in the room the entire time that Bernie was groomed. Good luck on grooming day!!!!!

It looks like you found yourself a wonderful groomer. That's very nice she allows and encourges owners to stay. It makes you feel better knowing your allowed to if you choose too. I only want to stay because he's being muzzled. He has never been muzzled and I don't want him stressed. He goes on the 18th. She squeezed him in for me which was very nice. She leaves for vacation at the end of the day. Keep your fingers crossed he's a good boy. Maybe she won't muzzle him with me there.

| I'm not a groomer, but maybe it's bad for business. If they tell you, then you might think it was their fault and they'd lose you as a customer. I'd much rather know.
