| Silly grooming questions... I'm a first-time mommy and I know this is probably a ridiculously stupid question but... How can you tell if your puppy's hair is matted? I just brought Tucker for his first haircut (pictures posted in the Pictures forum) and the groomer charged me an extra $10 for dematting. I am pretty anal about brushing his hair every day with conditioner and everything. Actually, I really comb it since he has a special relationship with his brush (he won't stop gnawing on it!) I give him the brush to go to town on and while he's happily occupied, I comb his hair. I can see his skin as I comb it. What does it look like when it's matted? I feel like a bad mom for letting it get so bad that she had to charge me extra when in fact I thought I was doing a good job. Any tips to prevent it from happening again? Also, she trimmed his nails and they were SUPER sharp...I have some really good cuts on my arms from them. Does this always happen or can you ask them to file them? I would do it myself but I am petrified I will cut them too short and hurt him. I appreciate all of your suggestions! Thanks!

| If you were able to get through the hair from the skin out with a comb I have a hard time believing it was matted. What about around the collar area? Could there have been mats there? Mats are just tangles. They are down by the skin where the hair can get knotted up- sometimes you can brush over them without realizing it but if you are combing, you would feel and see them.

| Thanks JJ. I don't know where the mats were...I only spoke to the associate at the counter and I was too embarrassed to ask to speak with the groomer herself. I brush him with no harness on so I don't know how I could have missed it. I think I just got ripped off and next time I'll have to speak up for myself.

| Yeah I agree, I'm thinkin they may have been lying, unless the associate just got dogs mixed up or something. When Reagan was little the worst spot for matts were where her front legs met her body, I guess her armpit area. Everytime I brushed her there were tangles so just keep an eye on that area and maybe the bottom area. I'm just trying to think of areas maybe you don't keep a close eye on and maybe missed them. You'll know matts, just think of what your hair would be like matted up. Its just small knots that turn into bigger and bigger problems. When that puppy hair is coming out it can be worse, that hair tends to get tangled up. But I'm with JJ if you were combing from skin to the end of the hair you shouldn't have any matts or at least you should know it. And for the nails, right after they are clipped they do tend to be sharp. Take him for a walk on pavement and it should smooth them down. I've also heard of people actually filing down the pups nails with a ruglar nail file, I guess you could try that.
