Question Anal Glands Always full!!!!

Baby has had her anal glands expressed 3 times since I have had her and each time they have been overly full. She vomits that white foamy stuff and my groomer says it's from the anal glands. Why do they get full so quickly? Is there anything I can do to slow them down?

Sorry, I don't know. But my S-I-L's Bichon has that problem. Only thing is their groomer won't do it. She has to take him to the vets for that. I hope you find an answer.

Some dogs have more of a problem with expressing their glands so once the glands are emptied manually they will just fill back up. Have you tried changing her food?

My chihuahua had this problem, but since we changed her food to Natural Balance Duck and Potato she hasn't had a problem at all.

Our vet says to pay close attention if they do have a problem as the glands can become infected (abscessed) and rupture. This would require an emergency vet visit.

when I 1st got her 3 months ago (I adopted her) she was not on a very good diet. I think she ate like Purina or some cheapy brand. I have switched her to Holistic Eagle Branda. She is not vomitting now as much. I may need to have them checked one more time. I think they were just so overly full from never being expressed before. Baby is 4 years old, so that is a long time to go without having them cleaned out!

My groomer told me not all yorkies have to have them expressed at all. I have read the more you do it the more you have to continue to do it. As for the vomiting my vet told me it was from an empty stomach the acid builds up causing foamy vomit.
As soon as the kids get up I feed them cooked baby carrots or scrambled eggs with cheese & a couple of pieces of apples. They haven't vomited at all since they get something in their bellies 1st thing. Hope changing your brand of food helps.

i have found that feeding more dry food instead of canned produces firmer stools. i think it might help the empty them on their own. i recently added canned food (only to give medication) and i have found that my yorkies seem to have their anal glands emptied sooner than before we introduced the canned food. and they only have super small amounts of the canned.

When you bathe them, just express the glands, it is very easy. They are located at 4:00 and 8:00 to the anus. Just take your thumb and forefinger and squeeze toward the anus and pull slightly towards you. Sounds gross but it pops right out..... ......... That way you can rewash the area and they will be fine & happy............

God Bless

I feed Nutro Kibble and a baby carrot each morning and none of my yorkies have ever had a problem with their anal glands.

Exactly. If it ain't broke, don't fix it.

We've NEVER expressed our dogs' anal glands and have never had a problem with it.

My yorkie never needs her anal glands emptied, but my maltese does. When I got him 2 months ago I noticed that he would drag his butt and I noticed that he would smell, I finally figured out that it was his anal glands. I read on here about how to empty them and I did. I am not sure how big everyone elses anal glands get but his was bulging out and you could just look at his bottom and see that they were so swollen. I was afraid that they were abscessed so my daughter took him to the vet a couple days later when he went for his last set of shots at the vet he emptied them again and said that they were full again. I have had to do this a few times since then too. It looks like that he might always have this problem. I have read somewhere that some dogs have to have thiers removed. Has anyone heard of having them removed?

Did your girl have problems with vomiting? Right after Baby has her anal glands expressed she does not vomit, but about 2 weeks after they are expressed, she starts vomiting again.

Also when she drinks water after we have gone on a walk, she will vomit. It's like when she is really excited or wore out from a walk.

I really need to have her checked out by a vet.

You can have the anal glands removed, but it isn't really recommended unless the problem is a cronic one. If a dog/puppy has never had the glands expressed and isn't having any problems, then please don't let anyone express them because then it will be an ongoing thing. My 15 year old Chihuahua has never had hers expressed and neither has Zada 2 1/2 or Azrael 2 yr. 5 months and I don't plan on expressing them unless it becomes necessary. I have always home cooked for my dogs, so maybe that helps.
