Default stringy looking coat

Sadie has a silky coat. It isn't floor length but, no matter how much I brush her the bottom of her coat looks thin and stringy..Do you think if I cut like an inch off this would help? I know with human's it does....what do you think?

It will make it look thicker but that will not prevent it from getting thin again. What you must do is find out why the coat is thin.

You may be breaking it while brushing it. Brush only lightly sprayed hair as it has almost 50% more elasticity. Use the proper brush, and do not lift your hand up while brushing let the brush follow through to the ends of the hair.

Your dog may be breaking coat on the carpet or just by playing.

Check to make sure your dog is not scratching at the coat.

Best of luck to you and yes it does look better to trim the ends.

She has never had a thick coat...(she is the adult yorkie in my avatar) and she NEVER matts..this is one good thing about a silky coat. I dont' notice alot of hair in the brush after brushing her...although she does sometimes act like a wild woman and roll around on the couch but, I don't think this is why her coat is like this...like I said she has never had a thick coat.

Thank you for your advise

Sorry I couldn't be of more help , but if her coat has always been this way it probably will not change. But the good thing is you do not have to comb matts.

How old is Sadie?

My Abigail is 1 y/o, and it sounds like they have similar coats. I thought coats could change up to 2 years?

You helped me...and I am really glad she doesn't matt..Lillie is my new furbaby...she is 5 months old..she has a thick coat that is growing like crazy....she does matt...she is going to have a prettier coat than Sadie (shhhh...don't tell Sadie I said this!) but, it's already alot more work..I think I would rather have the thin coat.

So is your new baby soft coated or is she going to be silk? Soft coats matt so easy and are so much more work. I finished my one soft coated Champion girl but she was so much work to keep the matts out and she did not like to be combed . As soon as she finished her Champion Title she got a very short hair cut. She is very happy now.....So am I....

Default confused!!

I have a boy with a very thin coat and he does not matt. But my girls hair feel just like his and is thin also only hers is really shiny.Maybe they could be modified silk?wow this is confusing I wish I could see in person a cotton coat silk coat modified coat and a soft coat all together and then we all on here would not be so clueless as to what they are and how to care for them.

Same wish here! Believe it or not, I have asked several different people (vet, groomers, people I was talking to at petsmart), and have gotten a different answer evertime about Percys coat! So far Silky but dry is in the lead, but I have also gotten cottony as an answer, and once, someone even said wiry.

I just want to take him to the AKC and say here, what kind of coat is this and do you have samples of the others?

Default Wish we had pics of all types of coats........

Maybe members could post a pic of their babies coat. Hopefully, we can see one of every type.........Bobbi is silky (I am sure) so we could start here?

Coat: Feels like satin, always cool to the touch, doesn't matt, is thin, has natural shine. Can't use any oil based finishing products or he will end up looking greasy and unkept looking.

Default Interesting

I think Winston's coat is silky towards his head, then turns cottony towards his butt. So I often call him "Fluff Butt". Is there a reason for this 1/2 & 1/2?

Percy is a lot like that too!! His head is beautiful silk, but the farther down his body you go, the fluffier it gets and his underbelly is completely stringy.

Percy looks amazing right after he is bathed. But usually after a few days, even though he is combed, it looks unkept and stringy.

Here are some right out of the bath, and no bath for a week.

I think Percy is beautiful. Great pictures of his coat. I'd like to say he looks like Winston, but I think Percy's coat is nicer...Winston's back end is REALLY fluffy. And if I ever learn how to use my computer...I will TRY to post pics.
