| Attn: RedVette,Sophie's mom and others with beautiful long haired yorkies Another question about facial hair... Okay, I've been very patiently waiting for Gingers hair to grow out (used to keep it in a very short puppy cut). It's taking awhile, and her airborne allergies which caused her to chew until we determined the appropriate meds, havent helped. Anyway, I'm taking her to the groomer in a couple of days to get her ears tipped (even though they're floppy I prefer them tipped) her nails cut and a sanitary cut. I will instruct them NOT to trim the hair on her face. That being said, if you look at my avatar at the pic of her in the RED dress, there is SOOOOOO much hair in her eyes. I'm thinking we just have to wait for it to grow long enough to lay down. Is that right????? I'd love to hear from those of you who've been through growing out your yorkie! I feel so bad for her right now!

| I stuck it out with Sophie and just waited for it to grow. I know that some people trim around the eyes. It is a matter of preference I guess. I think that Villette trims around her girls eyes. I even think she posted a close up pick of one of them so you can see clearly. I will try and find it. Here is a pic of when Sophie's hair was in the same stage as Gingers. I just tried to put up as much as I could in a band. BTW Ginger is too cute.

| I was also wondering how long it takes for the hair to grow long. Oliver is 1 1/2, I bathe him every 7-10 days, and had him professionally groomed 2x already. I only have the groomer trim the hair to neaten him up, but it doesn't seem like it grows much at all. His coat is sort of cottony, and I brush him daily. So my question is, how long can it take, and does anyone have suggestions, cause maybe I'm just not doing something right.

I know the feeling. I have seriously been considering cutting Sophie's hair. If I do I am going to leave her face pretty long and just trim up the back. I am not going to shave her.

It is different for every dog. Sophie is almost 2 and she has never had her hair cut other than her feet and hiney. I bath her once a week and use plenty of conditioner. She gets her hair brushed and fixed everyday. Her hair is about floor length.

Yorkie Kisses are the Best! Donating Member | Oh yes ...we went thru the hair in the eyes stage and I tried really hard to NOT cut it - but with my girls outside so much - I went ahead and trimmed it and they really look nicer and it opened their eyes.... Ginger has really pretty hair - Like Sophie and it just takes constant fixing to keep it out of their eyes...eventually it WILL Grow !! On the hair that breaks off over their eyes - I just kept the topknot more forward till the long hair grew in - The picture of Cheri shows how forward I had her bow - that helps keep the hair from their eyes....then as the hair gets longer - move the bow back to between the ears... the 2nd pic of Chanel shows where I Trimmed - it was my first time trimming her eye hair - but man - it opened her eyes right up and is easy to keep up with. I only trim them about every 2 weeks These are what I took to the groomer - I do my own now cause no one really listens to me LOL - but here they are if you need some guides.... Shave Top 1/3 of ears Pluck inside the ear Sanitary cut on tummy Shave a LITTLE on their butt - no Baboon Butts !!! Shape feet and trim under them Clip nails – carefully Check Anal Glands – IF you trust the groomer Tell the Groomer - Cut as per YOUR direction - not what they think looks good ....Type it up and TAKE IT WITH YOU GOOD LUCK !! I hope this helps ! Time will be the only thing that makes the hair grow....Alot of people do NOT trim the eye hair - it's just a matter of personal preference.....I'm sorry she has allergies - Being itchy is no fun - poor baby !!! |

Yorkie Kisses are the Best! Donating Member | Ooops...forgot the ear picture - I do tip the ears too and learned a lesson.....The LEFT ARROW IS MY Mistake - I shaved too far down - I cut off that pretty Butterfly hair by accident - The RIGHT Line is where I trim NOW. Lol...just the top 1/3 of the ear. Ginger is gonna look Bee-U-tiful I bet !! |

| Thanks so much for all the help! That old post on trimming was helpful. I think though for that to work really well you need to be able to do it yourself. I'm really nervous about me cutting her hair, and so is she! lol! Sophie, Chanel & Cherie always look so good! I was looking at how you both put the bows in lower (more between there eyes) when the hair was shorter, I guess I'm a little nervous about pulling on her eyes too. I'll just have to practice more! Thanks for the compliments on my girl.

| BTW, Villette, thanks for the list. I've cut/pasted it and will be making some minor adjustments and taking it along tomorrow!

| Yaay! The groomer did as I asked! Villette, I took your list with me and talked to the groomer before leaving Ginger. She did I nice job cleaning up her feet and bottom and trimming her ears. She did not touch the hair on her face or take any length off. She even found a bow to match the harness she was wearing. Yaaay! Thanks to all of you for your advice, now if these darn hairs on her face would just grow faster!

Do you trim just those hairs close to the eyes that want to poke them in the eye? Or do you trim them all off the top of the nose? Ollie's are getting really bad, and I have to put her bow real low also.

and Jeannie - I don't trim that much - that pic of Chanel was last year and I went a little trimmer happy.... now I just BARELY cut the hair that pokes them in the eyes - I use this Tiny trimmer - it's only 1/4" head - and I just barely trim the eye area...just enough to catch the hairs that stick into their eyes....in the corner and a little under the eyes.... I LOVE it right after I trim them - I can see ALL of their pretty brown eyes....
