| Grooming Help Please! I wash Mia once a week, and I can't wash her head because I am afraid water is going to get inside her ears. I have tried to put cotton in her ears but they fall out every time. She is also very afraid of the hairdryer. She tries to claw her way out of my hands, which makes the experience very unpleasant for both of us. Also, what are some brushes I can use? I have read that I am not supposed to brush her with brushes that have plastic ball tips, but what about metal ones that have round metal tips? She also moves her head a lot when I am trying to comb the hair on her head, which scares the hell out of me because I am afraid I am going to poke her eye out, or hurt her somehow. Any advice will be appreciated. Thanks.

| I wash Oscar's head with a kitchen tap sprayer (I wash him in the kitchen sink) - I can control where the water goes a little better this way - but if you DO get water in her ears, she'll shake some of it out and you can gently dry it later (just like the liquid ear cleaners that you use - you squirt that stuff right in there!). Oscar doesn't like to have his head brushed either... I'm just very gentle and make sure that I hold the hair at the base and work from the tips of the hair down to work out any tangles. I don't really use a brush for Oscar, just a comb with different prong spacing on each end. A lot of people recommend the CC brushes (metal bristles, but with a polished tip so it's gentler on their skin). I bought a CC brush but RARELY use it - the comb works well for him all over. Is it the sound of the hairdryer she's afraid of? Try using the lowest setting air setting and medium warm temp. You could also try letting her get used to it outside of bath time. Oscar is so used to hearing ME use the hairdryer everyday that he will actually sit in my lap and fall asleep while I'm drying my hair. Maybe let her run around a bit after her bath and shake off some water on her own, then use the dryer - it will cut down on drying time.

| lol...Ginger's a wiggle worm too, when I'm trying to put a band in her hair! She does sit still well for the rest, washing, scrubbing, combing, blowdrying. It wasn't always that way though, hang in there! How old is your little one? I'd just do little bits at a time and make it as pleasant as possible. Follow up each grooming session with a treat or her favorite activity. Slowly make your sessions longer, getting more and more done each time. Eventually she'll figure out that sitting still works better and that there's something special waiting at the end. Most importantly, YOU have to relax. If you're tense, she'll sense that and it's all over. Good luck and hang in there! I thought Ginger'd never sit still for the comb/dryer etc. Now I think it's one of her favorite things (at least til the hair band comes out )

| I wash Sissy in the kitchen sink and also use the sprayer to wet and rinse her. She doesn't like the water on her face, but with the sprayer you can direct the flow and it makes it faster and easier on both of you. I use the liquid ear cleaner on her too. She doesn't much like that either, but you just squirt it in the ear and rub a little. After her bath is done, I squeeze as much water as possible off her with my hands before I start drying her with the towel. She doesn't mind the blow dryer too much. As far as brushing goes, I don't use a brush, but rather a small metal comb. Sissy is not very big and the comb works well for her face, too. She doesn't like to have her face combed, so I hold her head still. At first, she would wriggle a lot and I actually did poke her in the eye once or twice. She still doesn't like it, but will hold really still when I'm near her eyes. I also say comforting words to her while I'm combing. Keep at it - you'll both eventually get the hang of it.

| I had the same problem. I use tearless puppy shampoo on her head and a sea sponge. I just get the sponge full of water and then squeeze it on her hair. My vet told me to use ear cleaner when I was finished and that would take care of drying out her ears just in case. |

| When I am rinsing Reagan's head I try to hold her ears down so that the water won't get in them. What I do is take my hand and place it so that that skin between the thumb and finger are right above her eyes with my palm towards her nose, this keeps the water from running down into her eyes. Then I use my pointer finger to hold one ear down and the thumb to hold the other. Then I can also take the rest of my fingers and wrap them under her chin and pull her head up just a bit so that the water even runs down her head towards her back not face. As far as the dryer I try to put her right next to me then hold the dryer out beyond her then blow it on her (in the direction of myself). This way if she runs she's probably going to run in the opposite direction of the dryer which is towards me and then I can kinda try to block her with my body and arms. Good luck, you'll find a way that works best for the two of you eventually.

| I think its fine to get a little water in their ears but if water gets trapped in their ears I'm pretty sure it can cause ear infections.

| I wash mine in the kitchen sink too. For washing the head, I put a folded wash cloth over the eyes and careful not to cover the nose and the ends of the wash cloth block water from getting into the ears but to make sure I get the ears I put the palm of my hand under the ear and spray the ear too. With the wash cloth in place, I can also spray underneath the chin too during this time. My dogs have actually gotten used to the wash cloth and won't let me wash their head without it. I can feel Sonny pushing against my hand and the wash cloth to keep the water from running in his eyes. When I brush my dogs, I usually drag my finger nails down behind the brush stroke to make it feel like they are getting a back scratch and rub instead of being brushed. I don't scratch hard. I use a ball point pin cushion brush and a metal comb afterwards. I use my dryer on the lowest setting and lay it next to us so the dog will get warm (but not hot) air in his/her direction. But if they seem cold I will let it blow directly on them and then point it away, kind of like a hair dresser does. Just point it at them for a moment and then away from them. When I lay the dryer down, Sonny will actually walk over to the dryer and turn his head sideways to dry his own face, so I let him do that his self. To comb the face, I hug the head next to me and then comb the side of the face that I can get to. They see to like that too.

| I use a sprayer too and just make sure the water doesn't get in their ears. Maxx loves the dryer - he practically falls asleep its so funny! Evey, she doesn't like the dryer so I put her in her little carrier and I have this plastic piece I put on the end of my dryer and with it on the lowest setting point it in the direction of the carrier and she'll just lay down and after a bit, she's dry! |

| I'm new to this also....and my yorkie is also, judging from the way he acts...so I say nice things to him and give him cheerios when I am combing his head and face, which he seems most sensitive about. Good luck!
