| Anal glands expressed???? I was just reading a grooming thread and people said their groomers expressed their Yorkies anal glands. What is this exactly and how often does it need to be done? Who does it? Vet? Groomer? Julie |

Phantom Queen Morrigan Donating Member | if you don't know what it is then your yorkie probably doesn't have a problem with it and you should count your blessings LOL. or the groomer takes care of it for you. the anal glads are located at about 8 and 4 o'clock around the dogs anus on the inside. The stuff that is inside of them smells AWFUL. it is normally expressed every time the dog has a BM but in some dogs this doesn't happen. they may start to leak or the dog scoots around the carpet and acts like his butt hurts. Then they need to be manually expressed by either you, the vet, or the groomer. it is not a fun job. i absolutely hated doing it when i was a vet tech. the stuff in there can come flying out and the smell can kill you if your not warned. we always had to not use an exam room for 20 minutes after an expression because it smelled so bad. |

| I agree, I hated expressing a dog's anal glands, I had to do it when I worked at a dog grooming salon. It is disgusting, luckily none of mine have had this problem, I certaintly count my blessings, lol!!

if you don't know there is a problem then there probably isn't. the signs of needing their anal glands expressed are: constant scooting across the floor and excessive licking of the behind.

| If your dog has consistent firm bowel movements, this probably won't be a problem. I feed dry dog food only, no table scraps, occasional (once or twice a week) a pouch of soft food between three of them and I have never had a Yorkie need this done in 25 years. My Mom; however, feeds her dogs mostly canned and seems they always have one intestinal upset after another and all of her dogs have needed this done on a regular basis. |

How exciting to be getting a yorkie, you will love it. Please post pictures and tell us all about her/him, are you getting f/m how old and what are you naming it? Glad you found the YT site here, we are so thankful we found it and there are so many, many knowledgeable yorkie owners as well as breeders that are so willing to help out and give advice when called upon. Look forward to your future postings. Patt and ~~Baby Blessing~~

| I just read Lacy's Mom's observations on why anal glands need to be expressed ( ) and we are guilty as charged. Bailey does eat dry dog food but we think we are not doing anything wrong when we give him bits of table scraps, he loves cucumber, carrot, bell pepper, etc. OK, we are going to limit it because it is not good for him and we shouldn't have to keep going in to have him ( ) I am not anxious to learn this procedure myself. Sorry, Bailey, you will have to take your big eyes and ears and stare at something else while we are eating people food. Samc and |
