| Any of you do your own Grooming? Hello all! Well i have decided that I really really really want to groom my own dogs and learn how to groom! it'll save me some money as well in the long run so i thought this was good for me since being preggo and all, i have nothing really much to do! I was wondering, those that do your own dogs, and use Clippers. Which ones do you use/would suggest? I'm looking for a decent doesn't have to be super professional or anything, but one that'll work real well. I also have another project, a friend of mine found a stray that she wants to keep and it is FULL of mats, and she broke two of her clippers already trying to shave it off. So hopefully if i buy one it won't break as well when i try to help! and any good books anyone recommends? Thank you in advanced! of course when i get better and if any of you are ever around my area i'll groom your pooches for freee! |

Donating YT 14K Club Member | Hey girl! Yes, I groom my own. I bought my rechargable clippers from Wal-mart (in the pet section). They were around $30 and are Wahls. I can shave a dog completely down and still have plenty of juice! (not to be used on ears, pads, bum cause it's a wide blade and will nick) I have small hand held trimmers that I got from TSC for $20-25. They use one AA battery and I use these on the private areas, pads and ears.

| Yes I groom! I like the Andis AGC super 2speed clippers. They are really good and won't break on you. I took a dog grooming class then followed up with the advanced dog grooming class. Hope everything works out for you. |

| I haven't read any books on dog grooming. I have plenty of practice though with my own yorkie and maltese and then co-owning several cocker spaniels with my sister. This is one of the cockers that I have recently done. |

TSC is Tractor Supply Company. They probably don't have them where you're at but they're big here in Texas! LOLOL!!!!! I was talking to someone last night and they use a moustache trimmer and they said it worked great for ears, bums and pads.

| Hi Xtine, I do all my own grooming. I normally don't shave mine completely down. I have done one boy in a semi-shave in the past. I like to grow the coats. But I do alot of trimming at the bottom of the coats on most of mine. I have two sets of state of the art clippers but rarely even take them out. I use a $17 mini wahl trimmer more than I ever do my big commercial clippers. I am more paticular about shears than clippers. Gotta have good shears. I went to school for cosmetology when I was much younger and I really learned my shears back then. I have to have three different kinds for different things, but most people would do just fine with one good pair along with a small touch-up shear that is blunt tipped. Now if you plan to do alot of body clipping, invest in one good set of clippers. I use the mini wahl for paw pads as well. I really couldn't live without those along with my shears. |

Luvs Lulu Donating Member | I am going to try and groom Lex myself. What's the worst it will grow back if I mess up I am sure that Lex won't be happy about my attitude. I had a set of wahl clippers from when I had my Shih Tzu but I gave them to my dad. I need to get another set. They usually run for about $30. I recently purchased a palm clipper and a little skinny clipper from jefferspets.com. They were cheaper there than anywhere else. The palm clipper cost $12 and the skinny pencil size one was $8. I already use those for the privates, bum and in between the pads. I have to find a pair of round edge scissors to do the eye area. Well I figure we can try and eventually learn the right way...no harm no foul. The groomer will charge me $40 for Lex and quite frankly I am not that keen on leaving him there to come back. One thing I am a bit iffy about is the hair pulling in the ears. Any recommendations for that one? By the way...on the body what size clip do you use?

| thanks for all the recommendations. I was wondering, all the ones everyone has been mentioning, are they good for like heavy-duty jobs? i know our yorkies have fine hair.. im looking for one that'll take out like really coarse hair and mats.. and i know you get what you pay for, but my budget is $60. im looking for one that's super duper heavy duty and hopefuly around my budget.. anyone here have one like that, and used it on other breeds besides yorkies? or dogs with fine hair? |

| I had a tiny toy poodle years ago that I used to take to be trimmed. She always came back very traumatized. I decided to never do that again. I have always trimmed my own dogs but now with Angel having such thick long silky hair where I have always had cotton coats that are much easier to trim on my other yorkies. So I decided to purchase trimmers and I bought a cd I ordered from target that goes step by step on what to do and it even has a section on terriers. I haven't done anything yet but I am getting ready in the next couple weeks since it will start getting warm. |
