| Bathing Hi , I have a yorkie that is 5 yrs old that I got a few months ago.. She gets groomed one time a week at the groomer. I brush her daily. She has never had her hair cut so it is long. my question is how should I bath her myself and not cause her hair too mat up ( so afraid I will cause her hair to mat) . I don't mind taking her to the groomers but at $40 a week it gets little expensive . Plus I could use the money to buy her more pretty bows.. LOL Thanks |

| More bows!! Brush and check for tangles right before her bath. Shampoo and condition the same way you would your own hair. Rinse out shampoo well before applying conditioner. When you are working in the shampoo, do not rub the hair in circles. Use your fingertips to massage the body and work the shampoo more in straight down motion. After the bath, wrap a towel around her and hold her for a few minutes. Do not rub her hair with the towel. You can also let her run around. Lots of Yorkies love to do zoomies after a bath. Do not be surprised if she rubs her head. Use a hairdryer on low heat to dry. Hold the dryer a safe distance away and keep the airstream moving, not concentrated on one spot, at all times. Use your fingers to run through her hair while drying. Don't force a brush or fine tooth comb through wet hair. That will cause breakage. Once she is thoroughly dry, brush and comb thoroughly.

YT 2000 Club Donating Member | Get a good dog shampoo n conditioner. And a spray hose - I attach one to my laundry sink - or change out your shower head to a detachable one with the spray nozzle. As Maximo (Kristen) said you essentially shampoo starting from root to tip and moving down the hair shaft. I let the conditioner in for at least five minutes and I wrap him in a towel for that time. Then I rinse out most but not all of the conditioner. Then I blot him dry after the final rinse and wrap in another towel again. Then onto the grooming table. I like a soft bristle brush and once the hair is damp as I blow dry I brush out with the other hand. I have other combs n brushes but you could probably get away with just a soft bristle brush and a comb.

| I also wanted to mention that I bathe my boys in a sink and give them more of a shower using a sprayer than a bath. I don't submerge them in water. We use a measuring cup to pour water over their heads because our sprayer only has one setting. If you have a gentle setting on a sprayer, then that is okay to use. Just avoid spraying directly into the ears or eyes.
