| Confessions of a terrible mother!!! I am truly a terrible mother!!!! I have been given my 18 wk old babies baths every week. They both have (from what I read on here) what is classified as "cotton" hair. They are definitely not silky smooth, but their hair is so fine and thick and well cottony feeling - that I think they have the cotton coat. Well one of the babies (they are brothers) - Chewy and Thor (or as my 3 yr old grandson says "Chewy and Vader" but anyway... I am a terrible mother!!!! I did not research how to take care of my babies hair before making a HUGE mistake!!!! They are 1 week from their Rabies and Bordetella shot so I can not get them groomed yet, but "I am so embarrassed to even admit this". But Chewy has the most horrible coat that has always tangled and matted and has been a pain in the butt since 8 wks old. Well, last week when I gave him a bath - my sister (Chewy is her dog - see we bought them together since we live together and she lost her husband and 23 yr old daughter 9 months apart and she felt lonely needed something and we agreed 2 would be better to keep each other company... we have ALWAYS had dogs from Chihuahuas to English Mastiffs - and everything in between) anyway - I bathed Chewy and Thor and well my sister started brushing Chewy and his hair was soooo matted and she was griping because he was so matted, so I started brushing him. OMGOSHHHHH I feel horrible!!! I was using a rubber tipped dog brush and brushing and brushing to get the tangles out and they were coming out, but omgoodness it was like pulling his hair out by the roots and I didnt realize it and now he is all jacked up down the center of his back... I feel horrible!!!!!!! I am so scared now to brush either of them. Chewy now has terrible looking coat, he has white flakes all in his hair now, mats everywhere, and I can not take him to a professional till he gets all his shots!!!! I did Chewy first and I just cant even do Thor because I messed and probably hurt Chewy so bad!!! He didnt whine but omgosh I feel horrible about it!!!!! My Aussie and my long hair Chihuahua are easier to groom than these little fellas!!!! I just feel so horrible everyday when I look at Chewy and Thor - KNOWING that they have mats everywhere. We have invested in some Shampoo that we found online for Yorkies, and I have just ordered a slicker brush, and Complete Idiots Guide to Yorkies, and little round tip scissors to trim around areas, but I am horrified to touch these little guys because I feel like I have just ruined them. I know this is a long rant and a long message and if you made it to hear - thank you for reading my Confession of Being a Terrible Mother!!! But can you answer me this... will his hair and coat EVER get completely right again - grow again in the spots he seems to be bald - and will I ever be able to groom them and take care of them properly???? I am gun shy now and horrified at my mistake!!! I should have read up on Yorkie grooming first!!!! No pulling mats out, don't bathe matted yorkies, use conditioner, use special brushes... oh these poor souls I feel as if I abused them and it is killing me!!!! Too embarrassed to attach photos of my terrible terrible mistake!!!! Heart Broken Devastated Mother! |

| Hi there, everything will be ok. 1. Look for a mobile groomer, they will come to you. Young pups do not need to be fully vaccinated bc they do not have other dogs in the grooming van @ the same time. 2. Get your babies shaved down. Mats to the skin needs to be shaved off. It's ok, their hair will grow out nicely & you can put cute clothes on them to keep them warm. 3. Get a good dog conditioner & condition after shampooing. Use a lot of it & rinse very well. 4. Slicker brushes hurt, try running it up & down your arm, it will leave scratch marks. Invest in a pin brush & comb w/ fine & wide sides. I sell Madan pin brushes, they do not have those little balls @ the end. So the pins will penetrate through the mats & tangles & it can be brushed out. Message me if you need help w/anything, I'll be happy to help.

| Comb .........starting at the ends Not next to the skin! I also mist spray with a mixture of water and Buddybear's hair conditioner as I'm combing.

| Shave them down! Then, you can start from scratch!! Far less traumatic for both you and the babies, than trying to pull/comb/brush out tangles and mats....they will certainly appreciate the painless adventure! Last edited by Yorkiemom1; 01-23-2016 at 01:53 PM. |
