| Grooming questions! Hello, YorkieTalk~ I'm getting a lil Yorkie boy next month! My first yorkie, woo! (Not my first dog, however!) I worked as a dog bather at a grooming salon for a little while, so I know some basic grooming techniques. Nail trims, sanitary trims, ear cleaning, teeth brushing, etc. I've been trying to do some research online and in the forums for the questions I have, but I haven't really come up with much luck. Maybe I didn't look hard enough, so please don't hate me if the questions have been answered 400 times before on here! I'm planning on growing his coat out. I'm totally fine with daily brushing, weekly bathing and the like. It's really relaxing to me for some reason! How does the grooming you do to your pup change as he gets older? I also read that boy yorkies with long hair, you have to wipe them off after they pee or something along those lines. Do you just shave them underneath all the long hair on their tummies and on their bums? I could probably think of other questions too, but I'll just stick with those for now. Thank you so much, guys~! |

Furbutts = LOVE Donating Member Moderator | Congrats on your almost-home baby, how very exciting!! You sound like the kind of person who totally prepares ahead of time, that's awesome. As they got older, I just found they knotted easier bc their hair got longer and finer...but as long you don't mind brushing, your kiddo will stay knot-free very easily. I have 2 yorkie boys, and one doesn't get pee on himself at all, and the other one does...for him, I do keep his tummy trimmed down, but not shaved. Unforch, he also gets pee on his back paws too which gets smelly. No great solution for that other than a bath.

| Welcome to Yorkie Talk and congratulations on expecting the arrival of your first Yorkie! Feel free to ask tons of questions. This forum was a lifesaver for me. I have 2 Yorkie boys and do all of their grooming at home myself. My boys are in full coat. With your experience in grooming, you are ahead of the game. For the undercarriage of the boy dog: my boys didn't have much hair underneath for the first few years. They are now 5 and 6 and require more work in that area. I shave the belly and part of the chest, and a little of the interior of the back legs. Some people shave everything underneath. I leave a 'pee string' or hair on the penis to help direct urine downward, away from the chest and other hair. The pee string isn't very long, maybe quarter to half an inch?? (smaller for small Yorkies) I trim the hair around the anus, but leave everything else on their booty. I do not wipe after each potty trip, but we do partial body washes a couple times a week or as necessary. Full bath once a week. The biggest challenge is when my silly boys mark outdoors and tip their bodies almost sideways, causing their long coats to get in the way. Then it is partial bath time. The combing and brushing gets more challenging as the coat grows longer. I started with a flea comb on Max when he was a pup. Now we have an arsenal of brushes and combs.

2+2=4 X the Love ♥ Donating Member | Congrats on your new baby . . When my senior pup use to be in a full coat we never had an issue with peeing on himself. I kept the under belly long and only trimmed the long hair on the PP. I always kept a few inches for a pee stream so that is doesnt get too messy. Now that he is in a shorter more managable cut I keep his under belly shaved to about an inch and I still keep a short pee stream.

| Awww right! Great responses, thanks so much guys! When we do sanitary trims at work, we usually end up shaving the hair off the penis, so I got kind of confused there. Honestly it makes sense to have a pee stream for dogs like this, though! Does anyone have any recommendations for specific brushes/combs, shampoos, conditioners? That definitely has been answered before somewhere in this subforum I'm sure, but I'm trying to keep this thread going a little longer! :P haha! |
