| Nail Clipping I'm going to try this myself on the weekend. I am a nervous wreck thinking about it!!! I was going to try it last weekend but, sadly, my intestines had other plans. Anyway, I watched a video re: this from here which was great. Still, though, does anyone have any suggestions for sweaty palms? lol I'm way more nervous than Teddy (until the act, I'm sure) and I don't know how I'll keep him from slipping through my sweaty anxiety-ridden hands!!!! |

Furbutts = LOVE Donating Member Moderator | It can be a bit nerve wracking bc you worry about cutting the quick...so just start tiny...just trim off the very tip until you get the hang of it and feel a bit more confident to cut off just a bit more. Oh also, have that styptic powder or gel on hand in case you do cut the quick.

| Just want to wish you the best at this endeavor! It's still a tricky one for me at times but it got a whole lot easier when I got the clippers with that safety plate/depth restrictor plate on it. LOL Now, it's all about the dog's attitude as to how well it goes. |

Thank you both very much. I got some clippers called guillotines which, by the name, suggests they should be approached with respect...lol Gonna try it out when hubby is home in case I faint if Teddy screams. I am such a wuss.

| I personally don't like the guillotine style clippers...they cut too much off bc you can't see the nail... I like the small scissor type made for cats or other small animals. It looks like this: nail scissor.jpg You can start by clipping tiny slivers @ a time. Make sure to look @ the tip of the nail & stop when you see a black spot...beyond that is the quick.

| It's also easier to trim nails after a bath, softer nails means lesser force on clippers.

| Well, in the end I completely wussed out. Hubby was handling things, just taking the tips off, but I became so sweaty and agitated that I said I'd leave the room so he could continue and he just stopped. Argh!!! Maybe try again later in the week! Thanks for the tips all |

| How often do you recommend they be trimmed? I am a wuss - so about 2 or 3 weeks after grooming we got to the vet who charges $7 to trim nails (if the dog is fairly cooperative).

| Misty - do you take Teddy to the groomer to have his hair cut? Just wondering, because our groomer cuts Harry's nails at the same time as his bath/body massage/anal gland check /ear cleansing etc.... Oh to be a dog (sometimes!!!) Can't we just file their nails? I think several YT'ers do....xx

Hiya! Yeah, I take Teddy to a groomer who grooms dogs before they show at Crufts BUT I haven't taken him in awhile cuz I was trying to let his fur grow in the winter. It's become way too much for me to handle now, though, with the matting etc (cotton coat!) so I've arranged for a mobile groomer to visit mid-February. The only reason I'm trying a new groomer is because I can only visit the Crufts groomer on Saturdays and she's booked up for like six months and since I haven't been going, lately, I haven't booked my slot! No way can I live another six months with Teddy's crazy bush baby hair..lol SO, we just took the tips off his nails this weekend and will let the groomer do the real thing when she gets here. I've never used a mobile groomer before so have no idea what to expect!!!!!

| Sally! Meant to ask, did you have trouble finding a groomer that didn't use cage dryers? That is why I have to use this specific groomer (not the mobile one - though she doesn't use cage dryers, either) because others did not explicitly state that they did not use cage dryers whereas this one did. It seems to be the trend and I just can't risk it after reading all the horror stories! |

| Have you thought of trying a dremel nail grinder? Much easier and it doesn't take long for the dog to get used to it. You do have to make sure the hair is out of the way, but I find it much easier. I only take a little off at a time each week at bathtime.

Well, I found our Karen through a recommendation from a friend of Andy's. I went along to meet her, and she showed me her set-up - no cages there. She said I was welcome to stay while she did her stuff - in fact she actively recommended it for the first couple of times. Which I did - and she was so gentle and wonderful...Harry actually pulls to get to her, when we arrive at her house I wonder if she knows your 'normal' lady - Karen's an agility trainer (Gordon Setters) and attends Crufts every year, small world, eh?! It's a pity that you live so far away, or I'd really recommend her to you. Next time I see her, shall I have a word - see if, within her network, she might know of another good one in your area?
