| Need Help From the Experts I attempted my first grooming of Piper. OMG...I suck and she is horrible!!! I have a beard trimmer and I put it on my hand before I used it on her to see if it would grab and it didn't. I go to use it around her bum and all the sudden she lets out a yelp and I see where it had nicked her. I wanted to cry! Well, after that happened she would not have any of it. I did manage to get her ears done and used the little scissors around her girl part. I need help!! How do I get her to let me try again? She even sees the clippers and she's under the bed! I'm scared to death to trim her nails because I clipped one of my roosters nails and clipped one too short and it bled like crazy. I'm afraid to use the little trimmers between her toes now for fear of it nicking her. Any advise for a newbie self groomer!?! How do you hold them still and still be able to groom them? Thank you in advance for any advise you can offer. Hey, maybe I'm just not cut out to do this, but I'm going to keep trying.

2+2=4 X the Love ♥ Donating Member | Oh no, so sorry Tammy. You can put some A & D ointment on her bottom. Its safe for dogs. Apply a thin coat 4-6 times a day. I really never had an issue with them trying to get/dart away simply because they are very well trained and listen to me very well. Try working with her on her sit, stand and stay commands. For her bottom you can use the shortest guard you have. But sadly you will need to use them without the guard for the brim of her nose and eyes. That will take some practice and a steady hand. You can do some conditioning with the trimmers. While speaking to her in a calm reassuring voice, touch her around her bottom and her face while with the trimmer while they are OFF. Occasionally turning them on and off getting her use to the sound of them. Also you can lay them on her while ON so that she gets use the vibration. For her bottom: while you have someone help hold her around her chest grip the base of her tail and hold it strait up. Using the trimmers w/guard go right over her rectum. Do not worry the guard if on properly will prevent her from being cut. For her nose/eyes: while you have someone help hold her around her chest grip her hair on each side of her mussel and under her chin so that she can not turn her head. Take the trimmers w/out the guard. Starting toward the middle of her eyes and go strait down the brim of her nose to the very tip. Than very very carefully (while holding her chin hair) do the corners of her eyes. If you can not accomplish this with the trimmers use scissors!

| I'm not going to trim the hair between her eyes or on her nose. That's the whole reason I decided to do it myself because the gal grooming her kept doing it when I asked her not to.

| I wouldn't use the beard trimmers again...is it your Hubby's? Don't think she's too hairy back there...you can use blunt nosed scissors to trim the hair.

| For nails, if she's good & sits there for you, it helps if she's sitting on a higher table. Good natural light. Are her nails black? Or mixed w/white (I've never seen a parti yorkie's nails b4, I've never met a Parti or a Beiwer b4)...lighter nails are so much easier to see. You can actually see the quick. If it's black, cut little slivers until you see a black dot in the middle. Beyond that is the quick. You'll get a sense of where her quick is & it will get easier. Don't 4get to give her a yummy treat when you're done.

| Jenny, she has a mix of black and white nails. You would love my little parti girl!! She absolutely hates to have her feet touched. How often should I trim her nails and what do you suggest using? I did end up using the blunt nosed scissors to trim around her bum but I was using the trimmers to trim the hair between her bum and her girl part. If it gets too long her poop gets stuck in it. How do I trim the hair on the pads of her feet? The trimmer is a very small, fine toothed trimmer similar to the peanut trimmer but it doesn't look as wide as the peanut. Thank you for the help, both of you!! BTW...she's naughty and will not sit if I'm holding her paws.

Here's a great blog by a groomer: Grooming Lessons from a Real Groomer: Lesson 2 How to use Scissors & Clippers For the nails...While you're relaxing, massage her paws, touch her nails, get her used to having her paw & nails touched. Have the nail clipper out, don't touch her w/the clipper, but put it next to her paw. If she doesn't move her paw away, praise & treat. Gradually end up touching her paw w/the clipper. If no reaction, praise & treat. For Turbo, I have to ask for his hand. If I grab his hand, he tries to take it away loll. Only Turbo & Mimi will tolerate nail clippings. I need to wrap Momo & Princess tightly in a towel & I flip them over on their back (I only do this so I can have easy access to their paws) & trim their nails bc they freak out. Even wrapped up, they try to wiggle out. They both had their nails ripped out b4, Momo's dewclaw when he was playing w/his ball, think it got snagged on the berber carpet or fabric couch. Princess lost her nail when I accidentally nudged her off the stairs. So it's very difficult to trim their nails & I found wrapping them in a towel keeps them safe & I have more control. I do massage their paws, touch their nails, kiss it & paw it on my face...but they still freak out.
