| First grooming When you guys take your yorkies to the groomer, do you tell them a certain way to cut their hair or just let them do it? I've never taken Lola yet and called a lady yesterday and she said I can bring in a picture of how I want her hair cut. I've been looking and I can't seem to find one I like that may be around her age. I want the hair on her head to grow more so I can put it up. Right now most of it will go into a band but by the end of the day the main front of it is out and in her eyes. Her ears are still floppy and I've been thinking it may be her hair weighing them down. And her feet hair is so long, they need trimmed very badly. If anyone has any advice I would love to hear! |

| Are you planning to grow her hair (her body) or do you want it trimmed? You NEED to be VERY specific. Pictures help. Write everything down on 3x4 index cards so she can keep it on her grooming table when s/he is working on your girl. I would also ask if s/he worked on Yorkies & toy-small breeds. I would request a ear tip. That's where they shave the 1/3 or 1/4 of the ear tip, depending on how heavy or thick her ear is & how much hair is on there. They shave the upper part of the ear flap, inside & out & trim the hair on the tip w/scissors. This will keep the weight off the ear & help it stand. But it can still flop bc they're teething. Once they're done teething, it will naturally stand if it was meant to stand. That will be around 6-8 months or whenever they get their retained baby teeth pulled when they get spayed or neutered. Def do sanitary, paw & nail trims, this should be done automatically w/out them being told. But it doesn't hurt to tell them, just in case they miss it. They trim the poopie hole, wee wee part, underbelly, arm pits, inner thighs, under paw & around the paw. Tell them to cut the nail as short as possible w/out making them bleed. DO NOT let them cut the hair between the eyes (unless you want them to). Some groomers cut these bc they think it's poking their eyes. Doing so will be high maintenance, you'll have to keep trimming them to keep them from poking her eyes when it grows out. That causes eye tearing which leads to red yeast which thrives in moist places & eye goobers. If you want to grow it out again, it will take a painstakingly long 6-8 months. Tell them NOT TO TOUCH the top knot, the hair on her head. So many people post that they tell their groomer this & their pup comes out w/their top knot cut off. I really hope your groomer listens, doesn't 4get & follows instructions, GL!

My other guys are all silky haired, so their hair grows slowly & I just trim when I need to, maybe once every 2 months in the summer. Their sanitary clips, I do once a week (2 weeks max) b4 their bath time. If you're not sure about body length, you can leave it or have the groomer scissor straight just the ends to tidy it up.

| Yeah, it's esp hard bc their nails are black & you can't see the quick. What you can do is get her used to you touching, massaging her paw. If she knows the command 'hand' & gives you her paw, then it's easier. When you clip her nail, clip little slivers @ 1st til you get an idea of where to stop. When you cut their nail, the middle of the nail will be white. When you see a black dot, that's where you stop. Beyond that is the quick. A good way to judge whether or not they need a nail trim, is put them on a table. If their nail is touching the table, it needs a trim.

| The one and only time I brought Blazer in to the groomer I brought in a picture of what I wanted and we went through her book and discussed options- then she went ahead and did nothing we spoke about and cut him really short and all one length. I was so disappointed! After that I started watching YouTube videos and grooming Blazer myself. I'm much happier with the results! I really hope that you find yourself a great groomer who can give you want you want.

| Ooh, I learned a good trick on here about nail trimming! I always give Blazer his bath on Fridays and right after his bath I wrap him in a towel, lay him on his back in my lap, and pull one foot out at a time and clip his nails that way. They are easier to clip when they are soft from the bath and I can cut much shorter because the quick is easier to see. Also, after I clip each foot, I file the edges down so that they aren't scratchy.

| Would this be a good picture to go by? The top knot is left long, the ears are cut short, and the face is trimmed. It's the best/cutest one I could find. http://www.topdog4me.com/siteimages/lucy4yorkie.jpg |

| Ok, first grooming experience was a nightmare. I had a feeling it would be but not quite as bad =/. My appointment was at 4, when I get there she was running behind and said to leave her and I could come back at 6-6:30. I didn't know I would have to leave her and it killed me (idk if I'll ever be able to have kids haha) but I got back at 6 and she was just bathing her. She was throwing a fit and the woman was saying it feels like she's very matted. That was the first thing that made me mad, not including that I had to leave her, but I brush her at least once a day, twice most of the time, and I KNEW she wasn't matted or any knots. I told her that and then she was saying it must be that her hair is just rough. She used moisturizing shampoo and put conditioner on her like 3 times and was going on and on about how she smells like smoke (my parents do so I can't help that). Then she cut her nails, which Lola hated and was yelping so I thought she was hurting her. Then dried her as she was combing her hair, which she also hated. I showed her the picture and told her specifically not to cut the top know because I want it to grow to put in a hairbow and we talked about everything when I dropped her off. I had to hold her down for everything she did and take breaks and before I knew it and could say anything she combed all of her top straight down and cut straight across like bangs. So I couldn't say anything then because it was already done. She completely cut out around her eyes. It looks choppy but I guess that's to be expected. She didn't cut her body hair and charged me $5 less because "she didn't do that much". I planned on tipping her $5 to start with and went ahead and gave her what I was going to just because she gave her such a hard time. I'm a hairdresser so I have a soft spot for tips and know what it's like lol..But now it's going to take such a long time for that to grow back out and it wasn't even as long as I wanted to start with. Sorry for the long post but here are some pictures. Yes, they look cute, but it looks different in the pictures. DSCN0007.JPG This is why I wanted it to grow so it would stay up better. | Oh, and she only barely trimmed the ears. By that point I was so over it so I just really didn't care. |

| Poor pup, you probably should have walked out after the way she was acting during the bath. My Lola's first groom was a disaster too, the eye hair does take forever to grow out. It's been a bit over 2 months and her hair is to the point of poking her in the eye , it'll probably be 4 more months before it lays decently. If you don't like the bangs you may be able to pull them back with a clip. The picture you wanted looks like the dog has bangs and the hair around her eyes cut. But if you told her not to do those things she should have listened to your words. Be prepared to reteach your baby that grooming isn't a bad thing, it took me weeks to undue the damage the groomer did. |

The good thing is, her hair will grow back. Looks like her ears are on the heavy side, are her ear leathers pretty thick? It might not stand, so IDK if that was your goal for the ear tipping. But if it was meant to stand, they will, after she's done teething. If you want, you can look for another groomer just to tip her ears for you or ask the current groomer if she can do that for you (if you want to go back to her). For the hair around her nose, I would train it to go down by brushing or combing it. You'll probably have to do this couple of x's a day & remove any hairs that poking her eyes.

| I can so relate! Puff will be 2 in May and I still haven't found a groomer I like. Last week she had a grooming appointment and I wrote out very specific instructions, including not to cut the top of her head. She looks like she was scalped by a 3 year old with scissors! I've decided that we are done with trying to find somebody--from now on I will be doing all of her grooming!
