| Application: Internal or External?? Hi Everyone! Ya'll are probably gonna laugh at me but I have been watching various grooming threads and some have mentioned coconut oil. I am wanting to know if this is a product you apply to the coat or do you purchase an ingestible coconut oil/milk or something like that. Ok...so stop laughing I purchased in the beauty supply aisle at Wally World, a topical coconut oil and used it on Princess Sophie's coat to help battle the fly away baby hair that tangles so badly! It worked like magic but now she's a greasy ball of fur! LOL When I brushed her out this morning, absolutely no tangles at all. Yes I did expect something like this to happen. Thing is... she can't have a bath right now cause of her ear infection (which is clearing up) so I don't know what to do. I can't take her anywhere looking like this! She looks like she has never had a bath. LOL Have I purchased the right thing or am I way off base here? Also...if I have purchased the right thing, what do you do to get rid of the greasy coat? Am I missing something here or just too dumb to know what I should do?? LOL Yes, please stop laughing!!! I am serious here. LOL

| hahaha. sorry. i believe most give organic coconut as a supplement. i might be wrong thou... i got some and i use it in my hair but very little it is very rich and even my dry hair look a lil greasy. my kidz like the taste of it but i dont give it to them daily i forget...in fact have a full container. did you try sudsing up a facecloth with her shampoo and just running it over the oily parts....that might help. i would just keep going over it with a warm clean face cloth after.

| Hey Diane Your question isn't silly at all. I have been reading up on the benefits or the oil and had the same question! I found out that it can be both. Some give it on their food or on a spoon and some use it during grooming. The one thing I found by reading on here is that people are recommending organic coconut oil. If you search on here youvwill find suggested brands and places to get them!

| You may have used too much... I found a lot of it will soak in after a day or two, so they don't look oily anymore. I apply it to my hands first then to the coat, a little extra on bad areas. I feed it to mine with each meal, and use it topically on minor wounds, scrapes and scratches. Good to use a drop or two in the ears (not along with any meds though), and is good to use for brushing teeth. I have used the kind sold in the baking aisle in a pinch. The organic is best as it's not chemically extracted. I get mine from Tropical Traditions... they always have a BOGOF sale, they also make one just for pets, but I use the kind for people. I have also used the products containing CO in the beauty aisle only on their coats. Coconut Oil is naturally antibacterial, antifungal, antiviral, and bugs don't like it. I used it on myself last summer as a mosquito block... it worked well. I use corn starch or baby powder to absorb excess oil on coats, but only do a very small area to test so you don't end up with a gucky mess. Start with just a bit of powder on your fingers and apply it to a few strands of hair to see if that helps. Brush through thoroughly.

YT 2000 Club Member | Diane, I also give Teeka organic virgin coconut oil. I give her about 1/4 tsp. in her food. I found mine at a local health food store. I use it on my dry cracked skin before I go to bed. It works wonders for dry skin. Like they said, a little goes a long way! You are such a great "mommy"!

| I've used organic coconut oil both externally and internally. When I decide to use it externally, I tend to put it on, then let it absorb in for a while BEFORE I bath. That way it is absorbed into the skin and protects the skin from the drying affects of the shampoo... |

| I just want to bring it to people's attention that there is another thread going around about organic coconut oil that you might want to check out. A couple members talked about not giving extra oils then what's in dog food due to yorkies and pancreaitis. Interesting thought and im going to investigate more on this before i give mine any more oils!

| I think you should check it out of course, but I have a Schnauzer prone to pancreatitis and hyperlipidia (fat in her blood). According to our Holistic Vet, coconut oil is OK, it is animal fat (chicken, beef, pork) that is the problem. Vegetable and Fish Oils are OK. |
