| Slicka brush for matted yorkie Hi everyone, my Yorkie is somewhat cottony and wavy! She mattes and the brush I have been using is called Slicka. (Picture below) I seem to like how it works, and it collects the hair, but I'm wondering if this is right for my dog? Is there a better brush to look for or does this seem alright? It doesn't help with the matting, but it seems to do the job of brushing lol |

I ♥ Joey & Ralphie! Donating Member | I've heard that you shouldn't use a slicker brush on a Yorkie, but only those dogs with a double coat, it rips out dead hair. For Yorkies with a cotton coat that mat easily, you might want to first use a bristle brush, then a wooden pin brush, followed by a comb.

| I never considered using a slicker brush on a Yorkie (for the reasons Nancy listed) until Les Poochs sent me a "finishing" slicker, and one of the groomers here confirmed that she uses the same brush on her cotton coat Yorkie. After testing on my boys, I do like it for finishing. Slickers do remove undercoat, but a good slicker will not damage your dog's coat. Reading in a groomer's forum, the two most popular slickers are Les Poochs and Doggyman. I no longer carry the Les Pooch in my store, but I do have the Doggyman, which is considerably less $$. If your pup has really tight mats, you are going to have to carefully detangle those. I use a detangler (Pet Silk Silk Serum or simple corn starch) and the tail of a rat tail comb (from Mimimomo at her site toplinepet.com) If you are interested, take 10% off with coupon code LUVYT: Doggyman Small Slicker Dog Brush

Thanks for the info! Unfortunately, I am in Mexico and rarely purchase anything from outside the country due to the customs and shipping charges. But thanks! | |

| I'm sorry that I didn't note that you are in Mexico. There are Yorkie show breeders in Mexico. If you have the chance to go to a dog show, you might be able to talk to them about where to get Chris Christensen or Madan grooming tools. Otherwise, if you have a human beauty supply shop, I would look for a rat tail comb with a metal rat tail, and a really good metal comb. I find de-tangling easier with combs. It's easier on the dog too. Use a little corn starch applied dry to give the hair some "slip" an make it easier to undo knots. Work in small sections holding the hair with one hand to prevent tugging on the skin. Even if you use a slicker, you should always work in small sections.
