| How do I keep my dogs hair from matting when long? My yorkie got his haircut because of mats. I really would like his hair long but I hate those mats. Any recommended products or methods? |

| Hi and Welcome to YT! Alot of conditioner after a bath, leave-in conditioner to use during brushing, and brushing 1-2 times each day.

Donating YT 10K Club Member | Some yorkies have cotton coats that tend to mat easily. If that's your case...it will require brushing and grooming daily

| Using a good shampoo and conditioner will help. You also need a spray conditioner to spray the ends when combing. If you want a long coat you need to commit to combing at least once a day. If your dog's coat is silky you can get away with once a day. A cotton coat may require more work than that. Make sure you use a good metal grooming comb and have a nice pin brush as well. I prefer using all natural shampoos and conditioners as they do not strip the coat and damage it. A bath once a week helps keep the coat clean and conditioned. Daily grooming keeps the coat from getting mats and only takes a few minutes when the coat is kept in good condition. If you don't really have the time to do the daily grooming it is kinder just to keep the coat shorter. |

| I have found with my boys that these are the best ways for us to fight tangles: 1. Keep the coat clean as possible 2. Always rinse shampoo out really, really well 3. Use a good conditioner and try to leave it on your dog for 5 -10 minutes before rinsing (wrap in a towel to keep warm while waiting to rinse) 4. Check for tangles daily. I don't fully brush my boys every day because brushing a dirty coat causes damage, but I check for tangles and take care of them before they grow bigger and worse 5. Use great tools: Jenny (YT user Mimimomo) sells Madan products on her website TopLinePet.com. We love the Madan rat tail comb with a steel tail for detangling. We also love wood pin brushes and small combs. 6. Use a brushing spray or leave in conditioner/detangler to make brushing easier and to discourage tangling. Every coat is different and requires different products. For my boys, I use mostly Pet Silk Silk Serum. I put a little in my hands and work it through their coats. I also use Vellus anti-stat spray. There are so many great products to choose from.

| All great suggestions. I agree with Maximo on all points and I would add just one more: Less is more, and if you are using a lot of products on his coat, it is a good idea to use a clarifying shampoo every couple months ( more or less as needed, according to your pups hair type) to get rid of the build up that tends to "choke" the coat, so to speak. And rinse rinse rinse really well. Maintaining a long, good condition coat, requires attention to the coat (brushing regularly, bathing, grooming), attention to nutrition (no matter what you use on the coat, it's condition starts from the inside out). whether you use hard or soft water can also affect the coats' condition
