| nails and sanitary trimming Hey yall!! So i got my puppy bentley last thursday. So i have had him for a week. Tonight i did his nails... And might i say i am PROUD of the job i have done!! He did SO well!! No yelping, no blood, happy puppy and mommy!!! . He even dozed off a few times!! I was so proud of him.. There are a few other questions i have. I am thinking about trimming the hair around his bottom and peepee area. Is this a good idea? I try to keep his bottom as clean as possible. Every time he goes potty i wash him with a washcloth. But i still feel like maybe he needs a trim. And im so afraid he could get an infection around his peepee. I keep it clean also wiping after every potty break. Which is a lot. And.i think it might.make things easier if its trimmed. But much should i do? Also i will be shaving his ears in the.next few days. Any advice on that????? And lastly, what does it.mean to have their anal glands extracated(or whatever its called)??? |

| You are being such a good new mommy (or daddy). I shave my girls bellies a little to keep it clean. You shouldn't need to wipe every time he goes pee pee or poop (unless some poop gets visibly stuck in the hair). But it won't harm him if you do. I know people here talk about "leaving a pee string" on their males so that the pee is directed downwards to the ground instead of towards their body. Mine luckily have never- Knock on wood- had problems with there anal glands. Your vet or a groomer should be able to show you how to properly empty them if they need it done.

| I just wanted to welcome you to Yorkie Talk too! I agree it sure sounds like you're doing an awesome job with clipping your new baby boy's nails and caring for him. There is no harm at all in trimming his private parts and this may very well help keep him cleaner. I only have girls so I'm sure not an expert on boy yorkies although I'm sure there will be some other members on here that can help you out in that area. I know there is definitely no problem with him getting an infection if you keep him clean, in fact it could actually prevent one. If you're shaving his ears in the next few days then I'll tell you what I do with my girls. I use a mustache trimmer and trim the top third of the ear tip only front and back and then use my rounded scissors to trim around the the tip of the ears to clean them up a bit. This helps keep the ears looking really perky and clean and prevents from drooping when the puppies are still quite young. Good luck with all of that! It sounds like you've already got a handle on this but hope it goes well for you! Last edited by cory; 04-27-2012 at 08:08 PM. |

| Hi and welcome to Yorkietalk. What a great mommy you are. I have a boy and when I trim him, I leave about a 1/2" of hair trimmed at an angle so the pee goes away from his tummy. I also wipe their little butts after they potty. I figure they snuggle up against me all the time so the cleaner they are, the cleaner I'll stay. Lol
