How often do you trim your baby's nails?

Just wondering what the best time frame is to have this done? I groom Taycie myself and I can do everything except her feet. She does not like it at all and I get to nervous I'm going to get her quick.

I had a groomer today do a nail trim and shave down the hair around her pads. She was excellent with Taycie and she did a great job. How often should I be doing this? Is going every 4 or 6 weeks ok?

I go about every 6 weeks with my girls. But I know others say the nails grow faster for them. But it does work for me going every 6 - 8 weeks. I can always tell when the nails are too long. Just keep an eye on them. You will know when it needs to be done.

I use the Pedipaws on Tibbe & do them once every 4 - 7 days. Takes about 2 minutes or so - no longer than 5 even if it's been 10 days since last done. I hated using the nail clippers & this filing method is fast and keeps the nails nice & short and it isn't scary for either of us. Until I got his nails good & short, I did them once every other day in short & sweet sessions and finally when they were good & short, I then went on the longer time in between.

I've been wanting to buy this for a while, but was afraid it might not work. Thanks for your post! Does anyone know if this eliminates the chances of cutting the quick? I'd imagine it would since you aren't actually cutting the nail. She's almost 2 and only gets her nails trimmed by the vet or when she's groomed bc I'm so scared of cutting the quick.

I have four girls and find that their nails all seem to grow at different rates. I clip some of them weekly, biweekly or monthly depending upon how they look at different times of the year. Also, I find that often times their front nails seem to grow much faster than the back ones. Has anyone else found this?

Don't you also think that their nails grow faster in the summer than the winter just like ours do?

I use little cat clippers on my girls which seem to work the best because I can see the nail so much better. I've never had a problem with nicking the quick so far, thank goodness for that. I'm always very careful and I know this can be very unnerving to worry about while clipping the nails too.

Lindi hates having her nails clipped so I have my husband give her a favorite treat while I clip her nails. She focuses on the treat and pays no attention what so ever to the fact that I'm clipping her nails. It helps me get it done in minutes which is great!

I am lucky, the local petstore/grooming place offers nail cutting and glands for $2.00 each, like 4 different times a week. I take my two every 4 weeks at the end of the month so it is easy for me to remember. As a matter of fact, I just had Maggie done and I'm takng Hot Rod in the morning. Normally I take them both at the same time but I hadn't groomed him yet.

It's a great savings as I groom my 2 myself.

It is a great savings to groom yourself I just put a reminder in my calendar at 4,6,and 8 weeks to check her feet. I am just going to watch them. We walk a lot so they don't ever get very long. In fact, I always felt they grew really slow.

But for the life of me she will not let me touch her feet. So I would rather pay someone then I'm not the bad guy

Lol, totally agree. I tried doing their nails ...you would think I was cutting their little fingers off. They start screaming before I even get close.

One time I cut one of Hot Rod's nail too short and he was bleeding and would not let me put the powder on him. I felt so sick to my stomach and terrible. I haven't tried doing it since!!!

Taycie is the same way. It took the groomer today an entire 10 minutes. I would be lucky enough if I even got one nail done in 10 minutes. It just is too stressful for the both of us.

You can get into the quick but only if you don't pay attention to the dog or the cuticle itself. When you are getting quite near the quick, the dog will start to squirm some or try to pull the foot away. Just look for the darkest spot in the center of the nail and how the dog reacts and just before that dark spot(the cuticle) in the center of the nail gets more than say 40% of the nail diameter, I stop. Or sooner if Tibbe is reacting sensitively by squirming or pulling his foot away. If the dog knows you will stop when you get close to the sensitive cuticle, they will start to trust you to stop the filing when they begin to react some. Usually they just lie there & let you grind away unless you are getting too close to the quick. Keep each session very short and under 2 minutes until your dog gets quite used to the whole process - then you can go a bit longer but if you do it often enough - say once every 4 - 7 days, you can keep each Pedipaws session about 2 mins. total. This method has never caused bleeding or anything like it unlike the nailclippers can if you slip & cut too short.

I give ZoE a bath once per week and clip her nails every other week, after bathtime.

It seems like her front nails grow faster than her back nails, as sometimes her back nails don't need to be trimmed.

Agree! Tibbe's front nails grow far faster than his back nails or he wears his back nails down more than the front. There is always more to trim on the front paws.

I've always been REALLY bad at keeping up w/ Jackson's nails... I always say I am going to keep up but I HATE using nail clippers on him. He gets professionally groomed every 10 weeks or so when they do it, but it's not enough.

He got groomed about 2 weeks ago, and I think I'm going to purchase one of the Gentle Paws things, just to try. I feel like the grinder will be easier for him and I.

Im not sure what is recommended, but we just do it once a week after their bath. Took a few weeks to get used to it, as their nails are so tiny. Dickie absolutely dislikes it, while Dillon( 2 months younger) just sits there, calm as can be.
