| clipping nails Hello, My yorkie is turning 11 weeks old this coming saturday. He got his nails clipped about three weeks ago. it is getting kind of long and I was wondering when would be a good time to clip his nails. I bought an appropriate nail clipper for small dogs. I am just very hesitant about using it because I have never done it before and I do not want to hurt him. Please advise. Thank you |

I ♥ Joey & Ralphie! Donating Member | Yorkies nails are harder to clip because they are black and you can't see the quick. If you let them grow too long the quick will grow long as well, and if you cut into the quick, it will bleed, so you have to cut them back gradually. I've tried all sorts of nail clippers. Joey's breeder said the secret is to hold the nail firmly, pain usually comes from the clipper moving the nail bed, and only cut the tips. If you cut them monthly you'll be in good shape. The nails should never touch the floor, if it is touching, it's way too long. Anyway, I hurt Joey once, so I can't do it, and I leave it up to the groomer. I tried Petti-paws, an automatic nail file, and that was a waste too, it takes way too long. By the way, if you walk your dog on concrete enough, this will file the back nails down, so only the front nails will need clipping.

| When we took Dudley in for his first vet check-up and starting his shots, my vet just held him and used baby clippers on them. He didn't mind at all. At that age their nails are so tiny you can easily use a baby nail clipper. |

| I just use the nail trimmers and cut the tips... I don't go too far back, and I have no problems

| i do Cedrics after his bath while he is still in my kitchen sink. his nails are softer after a bath and clip easier and he doesnt mind so much then. i only do the very tips. if you look at the underside of his nail you will see where the quick meets the nail. do online searches as well so you know the structure and feel more comfortable with the process.
