| Help with Grooming Teddy Teddy just turned three. Aside from keeping his hair neat and clean and trimming the hair on his ears, he has never been groomed. He has SO much hair. I would like to keep it long. For those who have long haired dogs, do you trim their belly hair? Does it help with keeping urine off of them? I am wondering if I should trim his belly hair? He's starting to look a mess. There are no groomers around here I'd go to so want to do it myself. Thanks for any tips!!

| I don't send mine to the groomers either. I trim Peyton's belly hair, I think it really help.

I ♥ Joey & Ralphie! Donating Member | I think most breeders who show, shave the belly area and also the inside of the thigh. Joey's breeder also recommended a "pee string" about an inch or so of hair off the penis. This helps direct the pee so it doesn't go on their coat or belly. This page explains a little: Welcome to Holly Huxford's Animal Page! Read "Trimming Urination Area of a Dog" I had Joey in a long coat for the first 4 years, and I never had a problem with him peeing on his coat.

| I never did anything with Max and Teddy's undercarriage until recently. Their chest hair has grown so long that it now gets in the way. I trim a couple of inches in front of the wee wee. They don't have any hair below that area on the insides of their legs.

| I am going to have to trim him up. It's hard to keep him clean of urine on the coat, it's ridiculously long. He doesn't lift his leg, he does "the crouch" which means it gets all over. I'm going to have to read the links Nancy posted too.

| I usually shave Hot Rod's thigh areas and some of the area above where his wee wee is. I also do the pee string. I angle it a bit so it is longer on the bottom. I think this helps to keep it more away from his belly area.

I also shave belly area, but I do have a leg lifter and not a squatter.
