| Coat questions Ok I am sure that this question has been asked a million times on here but I looked through some old threads and did not quite find what I was looking for. My furbaby is 5 months old and the hair on the top of her head is white now, and her body is changing to the steel/blue color very quickly. I am still confused if she is silky or cotton, she does not mat at all and her hair is straight as stright can be. So, I am guessing (hoping) silky. I just started using minksheen on her and have samples in the mail of yorkie splash. She just not seem very shiny.... is this because she still have puppy hair? I really want to grow her hair out long but my groomer told me that her hair right now is pretty thin and if it were her she would cut it down and let it grow long from there to get rid of the puppy hair on the ends. Makes since but I dont want to cut her hair! Did any of you cut the puppy hair and start from there on the long coat? I know it will grow back and i guess its like getting the split ends cut off your own hair but she is my first yorkie and I am new to all this. |

| It sounds like a silky coat to me. She still has alot of puppy coat left at this age though. I have never cut off the puppy coat all at once. I personally would just trim the ends but that's me.... |

| I had my AprilLove cut in a puppy cut from 6 monthsv( first cut) until one year, then i started growing it out. If i had to do it again, i would do the same thing, but i would not cut her facial or topknot hair, as that took the longest time to grow in, but well worth it. The body always seems to grow in quicker, but with a slow growing true silk coat, it does take longer. It all depends on what you are willing to do to upkeep her coat. The puppy coat is always harder to deal with than the adult coat and some can take up to three years to come into their true adult coat. Hope this helps

| I made the HUGE mistake of cutting off Uni's puppy hair. If you want her to have a long coat eventually why cut it? Silky hair grows very slowly compared to cottony, also if you cut it off it will be a huge shock TRUST ME LOL! I really think the groomer told you that bc she doesn't want to deal with it. If it were her, meaning since she has to do the work, she wants to do what's easiest. I hate when groomers want to shave or cut down yorkies. I would find a groomer who specializes in long coated dogs.

| Our Chloe is just 1 yr. old Last week the groomer cut her hair after she was told not to . How long does it usually take to grow back out? Is there anything that will help it grow faster? Thanks. |

| I did not cut Rosie's hair ever. The only cut she got would be to clean up her face, feet, and bottom. Other than that we never cut any of it. She has a long coat now and I am glad that I didn't cut it. I will tell you, I think it took us about 18 months to 2 years to get her coat longer. She is four now and her coat drags the floor. We are working on the topknot now. I do wish I hadn't cut that off. It is taking forever to grow. If your groomer don't want to deal with the long hair, then it is time to find a new one.

| Thanks for all your answers... my groomer is awesome and its not that she does not want to deal with it she was just talking like it would make it healthier/fuller. She just said that it was thin at the ends and I might think about cutting it. After reading this I think I will just have her TRIM the ends and just let it grow. I guess we have a long way to go before she gets a long pretty full coat....oh well, someday! I have been using minksheen on her the last few times I have given her a bath and after about the 3-4 bath I am starting to notice a difference. I take my minksheen with me to the groomer also and have her use it on her too so far her coat is looking better than it was shine wise anyhow. |

| Cutting it off will NOT make it healthier or fuller. Also note that even with silky hair, some can be so fine that it breaks before it ever gets to the floor. Take Uni for example. She is a silky coat, but apparently her hair is really thin, and we've been growing it since she was about 2 yrs old (around the time I joined YT) and he hair looks exactly the same. I do not cut her hair other than tipping the ear, trim the pads, and butt. I use conditioning spray when I brush her, but her hair just does not grow anymore. Her hair will never reach the ground.

| Playing in the grass and rubbing up against the furniture and layng on fabric can prevent a good coat from growing to the floor. I keep my babies in light oil to protect their coats and then wrap their coats to protect it once it reaches the floor, as well as it allows them to play and all. I also use a wrapping jacket at times too and booties (if they scratch). Then once their coat get about an inch pass the floor I keep it trimmed. But just putting a conditioner in their coat will not make it grow faster or stop it from breaking off on fabrics. It will help to keep it from matting somewhat and will give a shine to the coat. P.S. Trimming a 5 month old puppy will not make the coat fuller or healthier. I have known groomers to use trimmers on a pup that had mats. I never touch the coat hair till it is pass the floor. I only trim the ear tips and the underneath (bellie) area on a pup. Last edited by topknot; 11-22-2011 at 02:07 PM. |

| I have putting coconut oil on Uni's shoulders and back and keeping her in a shirt bc she itches. All her shirts are knit cotton jersey. Do you think I should be using a more silkier shirt fabric? Even with all this, I doubt Uni's hair will get longer.

| The coconut oil is good. I would not even use the cotton knit jersey, because it can still rub the coat. Silk is best. Have you tried booties? I saw where even Pet Smart had disposible booties - 4 pair for about 7.00. My babies search only because the do not like the topknot up, but have to keep the hair out of the eyes. |

| To tell you the truth, I really think it's allergies, but I can't for the life of me figure out what the heck she is allergic to. I've tried eliminating many foods, but no luck. She only scratches at her shoulders/sides, and occasionally will bite the base of her tail. What are the booties made of? I really like using the coconut oil, it keeps her hair like 100% mat free. Even when wearing a shirt for days on end.

| When the puppy coat grows out she will be as shiny as she can be !! Cottony coat matts REALLY much, is thicker that silky coat and not ''cold to the feel'' like silky coat is. If you touch the coat with the back of your hand (slide the back of your hand over the coat) when she is clean and groomed, it should be a little bit cold to the feel, then she has the right silky coat type as the breed should be A yorkie breeder told me this (that breeder has owned yorkies for more than 20 years). Fido has cottony coat, his coat is not ''cold to the feel'', not even a little bit. He matt's like crazy and I have to bathe him every 5 days and brush through his coat with a comb every day !

I think it helps the coat to grow that you always bathe the dog on time, I bathe mine every 5-7 days (depends on how dirty the coat is), I use Pet Silk shampoo and conditioner and I love it, it works really well. I shampoo and rinse twice, then put conditioner, NEVER wash out the conditioner, leave it in the coat but squeeze the coat so you get the excess water and most of the conditioner out, then just blow dry her That makes the coat much more soft ! and I think it helps it to grow faster When you brush her, have a little spray bottle and mix 1 part conditioner against 2-3 parts water , shake well, and spray it well in the coat when you groom her so the coat isn't dry when you brush and comb her. Do the same when you put a topknot etc. always spray this on her before, but not spray too much ! start with only a little if you need more you spray more This works also well for matt's ! my favorite dematting spray is what I make on my own just with dog conditioner and water Then you wont also have to pay lots for special matting sprays, this works well.
