| I was woundering about somthing. All dog owners, I was woundering if human hair shampoo and condistioner gets rid of fleas on dogs. The reason for this is I'd like the cheapest most reasonable way of getting rid of them on my 4 dogs. They all have flea problems all year long and they are finaly starting to attack. It gets annoying after they bite us time after time. I'd love to find out what works best please help... |

Donating YT 500 Club Member | Hi and welcome to YT. Dawn dish washing detergent will kill any fleas on the dogs at the time of their bath. But, it sounds as though you will also need to treat them with flea meds, either topicals like Frontline, Revolution or with pills like Comfortis. Ask your vet what is working best for your area. You will also need to clean all bedding, carpets, vacuum repeatedly, tossing any vacuum bags immediately in the outside garbage. Flea infestations can be difficult to control but with some hard work and medications you can be successful. Hopefully with cold weather the dogs will have some relief, but the larvae in carpets, etc. can be dormant for some time, so you'll still need to treat and clean.

Phantom Queen Morrigan Donating Member | If your dogs always have fleas, then your house is full of fleas, as well as your yard, and possibly your car. Anywhere the dogs go, there are fleas. What you need to do is a serious home cleaning. Get a hotel for a few days and set off a flea bomb in your house, or call an exterminator to to take care of the house and yard. You will need to clean everything in your house. Wash everything you can in hot water. Vacuum the carpets and upholstery. you get the idea. Any shampoo will kill fleas. The trick is you need to apply it to a dry coat. Mix up a bottle of shampoo and water, then start at the top of the neck of the dry dog and start squirting the mixture on. you want to make a soapy ring around the head to fleas can't run there to hide as your washing the rest of the body. Once I do the neck I then soap up their bum and privates because fleas will go there too. THen i'll go back to their neck and continue to apply the shampoo methodically down their body and legs till i get to the tip of their tail. Massage the shampoo in well then let it sit for 10 minutes. After 10 minutes rinse extremely well, then dry and brush the dog. You may want to get a flea comb to run over the dog to pick out any of the dead fleas that didn't get rinsed off the coat.

| I read recently somewhere that any dog shampoo will kill fleas - you just have to leave it on long enough. I didn't know that. (Not sure if this is true as I never verified it.)

If you want natural producys, Rosemary and lavender oils can help, as well as moth flakes in the carpet every time it's vaccummed.

| You can buy BioSpot. It comes in a spray can. You can find it at Petsmart. It contains an insect growth inhibitor. It kills fleas and prevents larvae from surviving. It lasts for seven months. It costs 21 dollars. Using that and Dawn should work well....hopefully. |

Phantom Queen Morrigan Donating Member | Biospot is a terrible product as are most chemical flea shampoos. I do not recommend using a flea shampoo on any dog because of the chemicals. Natural flea shampoos that use essential oils instead of pesticides are in my opinion much better. I'd rather not give my dog a pesticide bath, but to each their own.

that doesnt allow fleas at ANY stage of their life cycle to live in the home. My vet says to successfully keep fleas at bay....this works great. The vet office sells stuff with insect growth inhibitors as well. He says its the same stuff....just 10.00 more if you buy it from a vet | |
