| Yorkie's First Haircut I took my 4-month old Yorkie puppy to go get his first haircut and there's something I'm a little confused about. First off, the lady says she doesn't use nooses and will only cut the dog's hair if he's cooperative. So she recommended for the first haircut to only do a very light trim. When she said "light trim" I thought she was going to lightly trim his whole body. All she ended up doing was shave the hair on his belly and trim his legs/paws. When I went to go pick him up, I she to bring him in 3 weeks from now and they will start working on his face. I was pretty disappointed that they didn't trim any of the hair on his coat, which has gotten pretty long already. She said they typically don't shave the coat until they're 1 year old. This sounds a little hard to believe. If his hair is this shaggy when he's only 4 months, it'll be crazy by the time he's 1 year old. Can someone offer any advice on this? Is this groomer full of it...can you shave/trim Yorkie coats prior to 1 year? BTW, we won't be showing/breeding him so we want to go with the teddy bear/puppy cut and not the standard AKC-style look. |

| I would not shave a 4-month old (unless this is a larger Yorkie), but I would not wait until the pup is a year old if I wanted to keep him in a puppy cut. I think I would look for a different groomer, especially if she charged you full price for this "light trim." How about learning to groom at home? Lots of people here do it. Whatever you decide, be very specific and bring pictures with you to the groomer. If you say shave, they will shave to the skin. Are you sure that is what you want?

| I keep Parker's short as well... I would find a new groomer if I were you. I've had Parker groomed ever since he was little, so I honestly wouldnt worry about them cutting his hair even though he is young. When I take paker I let them know that I want his coat short but not completely shaved, and that I like the tight yorkie ears and cleaned up around the face...I always walk away happy (even this last time, a new girl groomed him because my groomer is no longer with the "salon" I take him to) and she knew exactly what I wanted. You just have to be firm with them and don't walk away with your pup until you are happy. Basically I would recommend you find a new groomer and let them know that you want them to use the razor on him to shorten up the coat without completely shaving him Hope this helps! |

Did you tell her you were planning on keeping him in a short easy to manage trim instead of full coat? Let her know next time if you didn't. Also, personally with my own dogs, i wouldn't give a 4 month old a haircut yet. Their hair really isn't so bad and they are still in the cute fuzzy puppy stage. I'd wait till maybe 8 months.

| I have never cut Dudleys hair down all the way. He is soooo tiny I left him long and only trim around his face alittle bit and his legs and bootie. Kayla is cut down with a #10 blade on her back only and that is not too short for her. She has thick thick hair and it just makes her look neater. Then with sissors I trim around her face, bootie. I think I would be glad she at least didn't scalp him like some groomers do. I know it will grow back but boy some of these groomers can do a horrible job on them. Like someone said, go get a grooming book, buy you some good equipment and do it yourself. Saves money in the long run and keeps your baby safe. With some of the things that have been happening I would almost be afraid to take mine to a groomer. Good luck and you can do it and probably be happier with the way your baby looks. |
