| My yorkie has allergies... Not sure to what, About a month ago after I took her to the groomers I noticed she kept scratching all the time. She does not go outside...since she has long hair I'm so scared she can catch fleas and stuff I don't walk her outside. So any how I took her to the vet and he gave me pills, antibiotic for a rash she had developed and a vitamin thing with omega 3 to put in her food. He said she's looks likes she might be having allergies... Don't no to walk. I am not sure if it was a shampoo at the groomers or the good I changed. She was eating "natures ...something not sure of name from the pet shop then I stared to give her Iams. So I am going to out her back on the regular food but I need to know what shampoo and conditioner that's like an hypo allergenic for her coat. She has like dry skin or dandruff on her coat... Any thoughts..?????. |

| Hi and Welcome to YT! First thing is to bathe her, if it was something from the groomer you would need to get it washed off. Oatmeal shampoo is supposed to be soothing to the skin, but some Yorkies are allergic to it, so maybe a plain type of shampoo would be better. I'd also use a conditioner/rinse after the wash and let it stay on her for a few minutes before rinsing it off. Most shampoos found at the pet store should be fine. No grocery store brands, definitely no Hartz products ever.

Furbutts = LOVE Donating Member Moderator | My vet derms recommend *not* using oatmeal shampoos (at all) for dogs w/ sensitive skin or allergies...it's actually an irritating agent, despite its reputation for being otherwise. If you suspect allergies, this is a good approach to take: http://www.yorkietalk.com/forums/die...tart-here.html

Its abuse to me to not excersice a dog outside and let it pee and poo outside ! the dog has to go outside :S its a DOG not a hamster or a cat.... sorry i didnt mean to be rude or anything but please start going outside with your dog so she wont be depressed or something, also dogs need excersice if they dont get it they can get too fat, dont have any muscles or anything I reccomand Pet Silk Hot Spot shampoo for her.

| Have a fleacollar on her if youre afraid she gets fleas. If a dog doesnt go out of his home and then he has to go out because of something (vet trip maybe)then he will freak out when he goes out:/

| Wow! Ok I take her outside every now and then for a bit. My home is big and spacious and she runs and plays with us all the time. There are a lot of dogs around my neighborhood and some are loose so I am affraid something cam happen. I love my dog she gets all the attention and love in this planet! She sleeps with me, she gets great care, love, food and playtime. I would never hurt her or keep her from being a " dog". I just dont take her out 3 times a day! I appreciate this forum and everyone's input and concern. |

Does she pee and poo outside? I understand you so well if there are many loose bad dogs in the neighbourhood, is it legal or illegal for dogs to walk unleashed where you live? If its illegal I would call the police and tell them about those people if its legal then I would go to the dogs owners and talk to them and ask if they could have them leashed, most people are very nice and do it for you glad Where I live its banned to have dog without a leash except in a garden that is dog-proof, so if I see a dog on the loose I talk to the owners, if the dog comes to me and is going to attack Fido for example I kick the dog (I'm not a bad dog owner, I just prefer that the dog attacks me than my dog ! its the only thing that works for the dogs here that attack Fido sometimes, I watchout for not hurting them but if the dog has his mouth around Fido's neck I kick with all power cause I dont want my dog dead because of some stupid owner ! I hope you understand me). I HATE when dogs that bite are loose ! But just because of them I can't just stop walking Fido, instead I walk him elsewhere Can't you go somewhere else to walk her ?? I think its neccesary for all dogs to walk at least 20-30 minutes a day and run 1-2 a week free, thats just what I think If I dont walk Fido at least something everyday he gets depressed, doesnt wanna play or eat !

| Hi my yorkie also has severe allergies. We had her tested and she gets weekly injections and is also on an RX to help with her weakened immune system to the allergens. It is forever, but it completely changed her back to the happy yorkie she was before. She has multiple allergies some ranging from trees to fleas (she is even allergic to cats, go figure) Does she chew her feet, that can be a sign of allergies. Also there is a shampoo the vets sale, I'm out or I would tell you the name (I can tell you Friday when I go back by there to pick up some more), but I believe it actually has the word VET across it. It is like $10 for a big bottle. It is excellent for allergies and is the only thing that does not irritate her skin. Anything else, oatmeal included makes her even more itchy. Good Luck and if she continues to itch, I would just have her tested. It can run around $250 to have the test ran, but it is definitely worth it. Also we did not get our lil' Pixie until she was 4 months old, her feet had never hit the ground. Once we got her we immediately began taking her on walks allowing her to run in the grass, needless to say the vet said the lack of exposure to the environment when they are younger decreases their chances of building the antibodies against the allergens. So more exposure to grass, trees, etc. can be beneficial in helping her build up her immunity. |

| Hello, can you give me some info about allergy testing? I'm curious about cost and how they test for things they can be allergic to. Our new yorkie Bella was eating Wellness Puppy food and she was started on that food before we even got her home. After a week with us she seemed to itch very bad. And it got worse. She ended up having a terrible reaction to Frontline Heartworm chewable. Several bout of vomiting all day long so we took her to the ER vet. Kept her over night and picked her up next morning, Still was fussy eating and because she was just 2 lbs. I worried. Then she had a bm and it had some blood and it was mostly mucous, Vet tested her stool and said she had no bacteria, send us home with canned Iams low residue food and Prostera probiotic. Fast forward to 2 months, Bella was on the Iams LR food for a good 6 wks and I thought I would switch her to a different food (vet said I would have to slowly introduce her back to her original food anyway, so I thought what better time to switch) I looked here on the forum and found that Taste of the Wild Pacific Stream was a good food. So I went and got that and at first she loved it, then she seemed less interested AND the itching still continued. I acually at first blamed it on the Iams LR food but still now almost 6 wks on the new TOTW food and her itching was bad and paw biting. Saw the vet again and she put Bella on Clavamox for 2 wks, and some Duoxo Calming shampoo. (Bella is PETRIFIED of having a bath!) but I used the shampoo twice now and she is no better. With her fussy appetite I backtracked and started her back on the Wellness Puppy food. Her stomach seems more red today and it's been only 2 days of slowly introducing the Wellness back. Little stinker ALSO only wants to eat the Wellness food too! Her stools immediately changed back to a lighter color and a tad big larger but they are perfect. I am glad for that but I think little Bella is allergic to something outside. The grass? I don't know? But she is itching more than I am comfortable with. Chewing at her paws from time to time. Lots of redness in her stomach and chest area and along the length of her paws. She has been getting Benadryl for 2 wks now, twice a day. The childrens chewables. She hates them so I have to tuck them into some food. I don't want to keep switching foods on her and I'm thinking that maybe we should just jump ahead to allergy testing. Cost is a factor and hubby is not going to be happy about this so before I begin to persue, I'm curious as to HOW they do allergy testing. Is it skin scraping or blood testing? THanks so much- sorry so long! Renee |

| I also wanted to mention that Bella woke up yesterday with a lot of white stuff on her eyes, It was a lot and I wiped it off very gently with a q-tip, it was like "sleep" eyes. today it was not as bad but I am wondering if this is "food related" OR GRASS? She is outside a lot in our back yard. and at least 10-15 times a day as we are working on housebreaking her. (which I have to say "YAY BELLA" because she is doing amazing and no accidents in the house for 2 weeks! As we all know, for small dogs and yorkies- this is a HUGE accomplishment! she is so good! |
