Braids Hello all, What a gold mine to have found this forum, I'm gettingmy first pup in feb and I'm so excited. I can see there's a tremendous amount of information on this forum, but I have serveral excuses, for today only, can I skip the searching? I was wondering why one has to use paper to grow a show coat, and braids are not used instead? Thank you kindly for any insight you can give me on this

Interesting question. If you consider the whole of the hair length as being delicate (which it is for many of the silk coats), then braids would not protect the whole of the hair length. As well the ends of the braids would still brush against the grass or rugs etc. And of course damage will be done.

Thank you Gemy, obiously it's my inexperience talking - and maybe a little lazyness as well :-D I was picturing the next to the skin braids often used by people with an afro these days, and thought maybe that could be used. Of course you're right, they would be worn when the dog is rubbing against things. There's usually a reason why things are done the way they are :-)

another couple of reasons they're not used, at least the cornrow type that you're talking about, is that in order to put them in so that they'll stay more than 30 seconds you have to pull them pretty tight which can break the hair and it's a little painful. In addition, if the hair is braided when it's damp or if it gets damp while braided, once you take the braids out you've got curly hair. a true show coat is supposed to fall straight and flat, no curls. Now I have seen a few in show coat who braid the topknot behind the bow and it looks great.

Some people do briad their yorkies hair. I believe it's called banding. I met a lady at a show up here who's dogs have absolutely beautiful coats. She is a hair dresser too and has a flair for it but she french braids the entire coat from the front to the back. And she does it in less time it would take you to wrap the coat. It obviously works for her but I imagine you'd have to be careful not to get the coat wet.

That sounds very interesting and just like something I envisioned! Now to find out who the mystery lady is I have tried googling for banding, but found nothing. Persistence might be the key here :-) Maybe a hairdresser that specialize in braids might be a way to go. Thank you all for your very kind replies! And a secial thank you to the lady who reminded about the danger of hurting the dog with too tight braids.
