| grooming puppy mill dogs I adopted a 6 year old ex breeding puppy farm (mill) girl 10 weeks ago. Poppy is a bichon frise so is going to need serious grooming at some point. The rescue had to shave her almost down to nothing as she was so matted, so she will be ok for a few more weeks. If i go near her with comb, brush, scissors or razor, she is terrified and runs away from me. I dont want to frighten her, but she will need a trim soon. Does anyone have any tips or personal experience please? I would prefer not to take her to a groomer as i think it would be too distressing for her. i have been trimming my yorkie Molly in front of Poppy in the hope that she will realise its ok, bt no good so far! Any suggestions gratefully received!

| I don't have any experience with rescues, but the same tips for training puppies may apply: Schedule grooming time when Poppy is tired, after playing or walking, whatever her favorite activity. Introduce grooming in short increments and gradually increase. Maybe do a little every day so that it becomes part of her routine. Maintain a calm and confident demeanor. If you are nervous or anxious, Poppy will mirror you. Talk to her in a reassuring, soothing voice telling her what you are going to do and to praise her. Give her a massage, let her sniff the utensils but don't let her chew on them. Poppy may be more comfortable starting in your lap on the floor or in a chair, or she may do better on a counter. You will have to gauge what works best. Give praise and small treats to reward each small stride in accepting grooming. Hope some of this helps. Bless you for rescuing this girl. |

| Thank you for replying so quickly. Your reply is really helpful as i hadn't thought about sitting Poppy in my lap to groom her. She loves to be near me and snuggles into me when she's on my lap, so its definitely worth a try. Even if i can snip a few bits of fur off each day, hopefully she will get more relaxed. She loves her food too, so will make sure theres some boiled chicken handy! Thanks again, will let you know how it goes.
