| Help: Bald spot on Yorkie's forehead from leaving a top knot on too long Please help: Few minutes ago I found a bald spot on my 6month old Yorkie's forehead. I researched and found out that leaving a clip on your Yorkie's hair for a long time can cause a bald spot. I immediately removed the clip and tried to massage his forehead. I feel extremely bad and irresponsible for not knowing this information. I've been putting clips on my Yorkie's hair for about 2 months now to avoid his hair from blocking his eyes. I had no idea it was bad to leave the clip on him for a long time. Sometimes I would leave the clip on him for 3 days or more. Can anyone suggest ways to help his forehead heal or by sharing similar experiences. I also read that the bald spot can be permanent. I am very worried. Thank you so much in advance for helping

I ♥ Joey & Ralphie! Donating Member | What kind of clip are you using? Joey's breeder said that it wasn't from leaving the band in the hair too long, it was because the band was too tight, or in other words too close to the scalp. She recommended placing a metal comb between the band and the scalp to loosen it band. She said that she saw one case where the scalp was black, meaning the skin had died, and in that case hair will not grow back, but my guess is the hair will grow back since this hasn't been happening for too long. Remember also to cut the band out, so that you will not pull hair. I leave Joey's topknot in all the time, and he has no hair loss, but I don't keep it tight.

Definitely leave room between the holder (clip or band) and the scalp. Another sign that it is too tight is the eyes are pulled up. | |

| You can use this gel to help train his hair to stay out of his eyes. It's made for dogs so it doesn't flake like get that people use. (BTW I am not endorsing any one place to purchase from - I'm only using this to show what the name of the product is and what it looks like) Topknot Get http://www.petedge.com/catalog/product.jsp?productId=45848 You can use several different types of bands to hold the hair. It depends on the thickness/amount of your pups hair as to which one works best. Terry cloth - stretchy - Goody - small http://www.goody.com/#/grid/girls/products/girls_gentle_ponytailers Latex & Non-latex bands Grooming & Tools As mentioned above, please make sure that the topknow isn't too tight. I've seen people put them in and their poor eyes look like they're about ready to pop out of their head!

| Hello everyone thank you for your advice. I use a small metallic clip on Bentley. And you're right, I realize that I have been putting the clip close to his scalp. I leave room to loosen those hairs near his eyes but failed to do the same on the area right on top of his head, where his bald spot is. I really hope the hair would grow back. Thank God I did not see any black skin. I will use your advice on using bands when the bald spot heals. Instead of pulling to remove it I will start cutting the band. I'm going to check out the gel too. I hope he's not allergic to it since we recently changed his shampoo and conditioner due to allergic reactions with the old one.

Thor's Human Donating Member | Also make sure you use don't use rubber bands or anything like that - you want something soft that doesn't take any hair with it when it's removed. I keep Thor in a puppy cut, but his previous owner did the same thing. She always had him in a top knot, and one day she noticed he was going bald. He is just fine now and I'm sure your guy will be too.

| If you don't use rubber bands, what are you supposed to use?

Thor's Human Donating Member | You can use little plastic bands they make for this purpose. They just slide off the hair, rather than grabbing hold like rubber does. I'm sure someone here sells them, or you can find them in a beauty supplies store, or even a drug store. One pack holds a couple hundred tiny bands, and the pack shouldn't cost more than a few bucks.

| Yes, when the whites of their eyes show, the topknot is too tight. To the OP, another thing to watch for is the hair at the very inner corner of the ears. I always have to be careful not to catch up that hair in the topknot. Not only does it not look good, but even a looser topknot will pull the delicate skin near the ears. I buy my bands here: http://www.laineeltd.com/cgi-bin/lai...ml?id=ZaJErIaa Use a band cutter to remove. Never pull the band out of the hair. Once my boys' hair was long enough, I started using cloth mini scrunchies for daily wear. We save the bands for dress up. |
