| Nail Trimming..No!!! he won't let me !!! Hi all. Now Dustie is the 5th Yorkie I have owned and I have always managed to trim their nails..albeit with a bit of difficulty...But with Dustie its different..He likes to have his shower..and will sit while I trim him face with a bit of encouragement..but as to trimming his nails..NO WAY...and I mean NO WAY. This morning I tried every possible way to do it...even giving him little treats along the way...but he was like a wild cat...couldn';t hold him still... I did do it when we first had him a bit..but now at nearly 9 months old he has got the better of me...I have looked at the video etc. but its like he sees me as if I am going to Kill him lol....He has a very strong will...and he does go to bite me as well..which I am trying to control...but it needs to be done..as they are growing..So help anyone..apart from knocking him out lol..whats a girl to do.. Chrisann..x

YT Addict | I just started a thread not long ago asking the same thing. You can view it here http://www.yorkietalk.com/forums/yor...sit-still.html Lots of good advice in there. Basically you just have to hold them down and do it. Sometimes it takes 2 people if they are overly aggressive, I learned this at the groomers today as I started apprenticing today Because it's better to have someone help hold them down than you try to do both and then cut too low on accident and get the quick. This will really make them hate it more!

| Hi. well today I thought I would have another go at his nails. I groomed him as usual..gave him his treats..then continued to sit him on my knee to just take the tips of his nails...Well...to say he acted like a complete frenzied wild animal..is an understatement. I can't understand his behavious..he has let me do it before when he was a bit younger. I know everyone says he shouldn't get the better of me...but this is the first Yorkie I have owned that has seriously tried to bite me....and at nearly 9 months old it is a bit much .!!! He can be so very loving when he wants to be. but I do believe he will bite ...I even tried placing a towel over him to get his feet..but that made him worse.. I think I may need to muzzle him to do his nails....Has anyone done this to their Yorkie...can't believe I need to ask this... makes me sad really.!! Chris x

Donating YT 1000 Club Member | Just a thought...could you do it while he's in the shower? If your Dustie is anything like my lil guy, once in the shower they just kinda turn to mush. I think I may have to try this myself. We've only had Tuffy 6 weeks or so & the vet did his when he had to gas him to get a splinter from a sandspur out of his paw so I'll be learning myself how best to get the job done. Good luck & let us know what works for you. |

| Hi. I am not sure I could manage it in the shower...He doesn't mind being showered ..but he seems quite strong..weighs 4 lb now and stands quite tall...I would need my hubby to hold him I reckon to stop him leaping out lol. He has a real fiery nature sometimes...But if you could see him now lolled out on his fav. cushion while I am on here you would never guess what he can be like.. I do think a muzzle will be needed though...don't want to frighten him too much...and I do think it is fear that makes him this way... but will try again with hubbys help. Chris x

After 4 months of doing it every other day (little bits at a time) I can actually clip his nails with a clipper as long as I am quick about it. If you have a really had time with it, I would suggest bringing him to your vet or groomer for a nail trim. Shouldn't cost you a whole lot either. It will make sure his nails don't get too long while you two try to work things out, and perhaps it will help him get adjusted and realize its not so scary.

I just started cutting Thor's nails too. I think I am going to stick to filing. He squealed a couple times even though I didn't think I was anywhere near the quick, and he didn't bleed. It was too stressful, for both of us! He doesn't love the filing, but he tolerates it. He's small, so I just use a very abrasive human nail file. Also, I handle his paws and touch his claws a lot generally so that he is used to it.
