Senior Yorkie Talker | Cleaning Ears Properly Does anyone know how to clean the ears properly. The other day after I bathed Bella, 2.9lbs and 5months old, I got a towel and covered my finger with it and tried to wipe out her ear. Well, it was absolutely nasty whatever was in there. Sorry, but it was brown. I always cover her ears so that I don't get water in them when I bathe her because I don't want to cause an ear infection. But I know I have to clean them more often. So can anyone give me some advice? Please. |

| is there a bad smell off them? cos if its dark brown it could be an infection, you will need to go to your vet for drops and he/she should be able to show you how to clean the ear with a q tip, we had this problem a few years ago.

| The proper way to clean their ears is NOT with a q-tip. Although I am guilty of using those (I still use them LOL). A q-tip pushes the gunk in farther. Use a good ear cleaner solution and 1/2 a cotton ball. Put the solution in her ear and rub in circular motion at the base of the ear (this will loosen the gunk). Let her shake her head (I drap her head with a light towel to prevent getting gooed LOL). Put the 1/2 cotton ball in the ear and rub in circular motion again. Pull out the cotton ball. I usually do this until the cotton ball comes out clean. Be gentle! I hope this helps. I learned this from my vet. Actually here's a great video that shows you regular cleaning and "deep" cleaning. THIS IS NOT MY VIDEO. I TAKE NO CREDIT FOR THE VIDEO!!!! |

| Don't smell the stuff, smell the ears. I frequently smell my dogs ears, I have a poodle that is really prone to yeast and infections and the very first indication I get is the smell. The infection smells strong and rather nasty. The yeast is a milder smell and not offensive. Both need a vet to treat, you dont want to give the wrong treatment as it aggravates the ear if it is the wrong treatment.
