| Help!!! Nail Trimming! Roscoe is 10 months old and is obviously not use to having his nails trimmed. I just tried to trim them and he fought me with all of his might for 10 minutes. They need trimmed really bad, but I am so afraid I am going to hurt him. Any advice?

| Nail Triming There is a clicker training video on Karen Pryors website that shows how to train a dog to let you trim his toenails, but it will take more than a few minutes to train, you might have to spend 1/2 a day or so, but will be worth it! when I took my dog to Barking Bubbles, the lady trimed mydogs toenails,(which I let grow too long as I am not good at doing it) She used one of those Pedi Paws type of nail grinder, only a more professional one, she uses it on all kinds of dogs. She put her arm around my dogs body and held a paw in her hand and just went too it. My dog was not happy about it, but did not try to bite, but did act concerned about what was going on. she did wiggle a bit. She took less than 6 minutes to do all of Abby's toes!!! You can take the regular kind and just take a bit off of each toe and wait a week and do it again. Let your dog smell the nail trimmer and then give him a treat. Make it seem fun, but matter of fact and no biting or lots of wiggleing. Good luck Good luck! |

| I did get one of the PediPaws to try. He hates it too. My husband tried to help me and hold him but he was just going crazy! He didn't bite, just wiggling so bad it was impossible. I will check out that clicker training thing though. Thanks.

My furkids Donating Member | I have been cutting the girls nails since the day I brought them home and they STILL hate it,...I don't know if it's the "snap" sound it makes when you cut them or if it just feels funny to them...I really don't think it hurts them...Anyway....I usually put about 3 inches of water in the sink when bathing them so their nails are soaking in it...I shampoo and condition them...Then I cut the nails...They soften up a bit from soaking...this does help...However..they still aren't crazy about it. I just keep telling them they are a good good girl...and they will be getting a treat...Sometimes they aren't too bad...other times I can't finish because they keep pulling away. You could always have your vet do it...sometimes they are better for someone else if you aren't around. Good Luck!

| Cutting the quick isn't the end of the world. You can put quick stop on it. I've done it a few times to Scruffs, but his quick is super long and his nails need to be cut once a week otherwise they are impossible. My advice is when he squirms and yelps and whines DO NOT let go or loosen your grip. That will make him think the more he squirms then he gets to be free!

When they squirm and you let go they win the battle and will only do it more the next time. Put him up on the table and have someone else hold him. Grab a foot and start trimming a little bit at a time. if he starts throwing a fit keep holding onto that leg and tell him no. once he calms down and stops pulling away you can put his foot down and give him a treat. Then pick up the foot and have at it again.

| When I first tried this, Kimbo wasn't having it. He really fought me. He hated it. Then I started touching his paws a lot when he was napping on my lap. I would lay him on his back and would touch all over all of his paws and nails telling him that he was a good boy. He would wake up and fall asleep while I was doing this. After a few days of this, I tried to clip a few, and it worked. He wasn't freaked out, because he had gotten used to me touching them. I still don't think I'm clipping enough, but at least I'm making progress. Good luck! |

| We hold each nail as we clip them (instead of the paw) & they tolerate it much better. |

I ♥ Joey & Ralphie! Donating Member | I would wrap him in firmly in a towel and just pull one paw out at a time, this really cuts down on squiming, but I cut it too short once, and it bled, so I take him to the groomers to have it done, the back nails hardly need it, but the front paws need it every couple of months. Joey's breeder sometimes grooms him, and she can get him to lie still in her lap on his back, I saw it, but I still don't believe it, he didn't make a sound while she was doing it, she just has a way with dogs.

I ♥ Joey & Ralphie! Donating Member | I know that walking on concrete helps file them down, and I've read about a nail trimmer that has a light that indicates exactly where the quick is that many people find useful. On the other hand, if I had the nerve, I think once a week would probably be best, and you could just cut the tips. I just get so stressed out doing it.

| I don't remember where but I read that if you put an old knee hi type stocking on the paw because there is so much hair in the way it is easier to cut their nails. Just let the nails poke through the stocking. it really does help. Half the battle is the hair is in the way. My guys hate to have their nails cut but this seems to make it quicker because I only have the nail to deal with.
