| first brushing....ahhh--advise needed So we have had little Scamp almost a week now. I decided tonight to try to brush him for the first time (feeling hes well adjusted now, etc), using a small baby comb of my daughters since we havent gotten him a brush/comb yet (that was never used). He is a redleg so his hair isnt quite like all other yorkie pups but similar. Ok my issue--he tried to eat/chew/attack the brush or fight with the brush the entire time trying to do flips to get it, etc. I kept saying no, continuing to brush very gently talking calmly telling him how handsome hed be,etc...it was a battle to say the least..it was all I could do to hold onto him! How do I nip this in the butt so to speak. Just be consistant, reward him afterwards (or would that be showwing him its ok to attack the brush?) Thanks!

| I think what you were doing is exactly right. Missy use to attack the brush in the beginning too. After being brushed twice a day for a couple of weeks, she got over it. Now she just sits there nicely. I never rewarded for brushing, but you could!

| I give Baxter a treat while I'm brushing his hair, and it distracts him for the most part. He also knows the command 'stay' really well, so I say that while I'm brushing him so he doesn't move around a lot. It works most of the time.

| I would try letting him sniff and check out everything that your going to use on him first, set it down on the floor, or just hold it up to him. sometimes, when you show things first, it helps out a lot. Fiona used to do the same thing when she was real young, that at her first vet visit we took her to when we got her, the vet told me that she would be one to be sedated to be groomed, and i was not going to have that at all! i was really shocked that with her age she stopped doing things. I would use treats and just go real slow, let him know its ok. But try letting him check out everything first! good luck!

| I had the same problem with dexter, but I found out it's a question of timing. Don't try to do when your pups are playful, wait until they are calm and sleepy. It makes much easier and worked wonders for me. You can give them a real good brush this way. My bush with a wooden handle is so chewed now, from when it was a big game. I could of saved it,if I had known earlier.

| I have a 5 month old that gives me a fit when grooming even though we brush twice a day. I found that if I put her on the grooming table, she is much calmer. It is not her normal play area and must let her know I mean business. When I am lazy and don't want to hike upstairs to the table, I give her a treat or something to distract her. That usually works well. Now I need to find a way to clip nails and trim hair, she will not let me do that anywhere.
