| How long are too long for nails? My puppy just got a shave two months ago and won't get a hair cut for a while ... I'm bathing him at home every other week. But how do I know when his nails are too long (I hear when dogs nails are too long - they hurt the paws)? |

| I've read somewhere that when the dogs foot is flat on the floor the nail should clear it....In other words you should not hear him tap dancing across the floor.....

| Thats what I've understood as well. if the nails are clicking on the hard floor then they need a trim. Otherwise the nails push the toes back with each step and can become painful to walk.

| I bathed my babies and attempted to cut their nails!!! OMG you would've thought I was killing them!!! They screamed and wiggled!!! I play with their paws all the time...I thought that would make it easier. It was such a bad experience. I was upset, they were upset...I never want to do that again

| It takes me about a week to get all of Chanels nails trimmed. I have to wait until she's deep asleep and can do about 2 or 3 until she realizes what I'm doing and acts like I'm chopping off her foot. No way I cut too much off since I only am able to get the tips.

Donating YT 3000 Club Member | I do my guy's about once a week just tiping them & a big cut once a month. The nail's should not be touching the floor & longer than that is just cruel! |

yep this is what I have heard to, I sometime have to go in and get a bath and nail trim in between his "real" grooming appts. I am too scared to try and cut the nails myself.

| we take Dolly to the groomers every 4 weeks, and I trim the tips myself every week and a half or so (to scared to cut more). the general rule is, when you hear clicking sound when your dog walking on tiles or other flat surfaces, its time to cut his/her nails!

| Ha! Just how do you look at their nails when they are standing to see if they touch? What Yorkie stands still long enough to see nails? Seriously now, we purchased the Pedi Paws the other day. (We had a $5 off coupon for Bed Bath and Beyond so = $15!) I watched the video they say to watch and turned the thing on with Penny in my lap.... I think it will be a while before we will be able to do her nails. I think one of the difficulties will be getting the hair out of the way. We have only had her 2.5 weeks and she is not sure about us handling her feet. |

| Diva hates for me to attempt her nails. She holds still and lets the vet or the folks at PetSmart (the only service I allow them to tackle) do it without issue. She's the only dog I've had who won't let me trim. |

| I have hardwood floors, haven't ever heard Squirt's nails click (over 12 years), so haven't cut them to this date . Maybe I need a hearing aid . I think Squirt's nails stay in proper condition from walking outside on rough surfaces. I'm not advocating this approach though. I do trim Gus' nails.

Luvs Lulu Donating Member | OMG Toby and Zoey act like I am trying to cut a freaking paw off when I do their nails. I tend to try and do it after a bath becuase I know that the nail is a bit softer from the warm water. God help me I want to scream when I do have to do them. I bought that pedi-paws thing and I can't even get near them with it. So I stick to the clippers. Thank god I got it under my sister's discount. At times I have to wrap them tightly in a blanket to be able to do their nails. I am about to walk the plank now and try to do their nails. Wish me luck. I might need a stiff drink after attempting to cut their nails.

If you know how to cut your dogs nails they tell you to do it at least every two weeks. this will help with the quicks staying short, that way they can be nice and short. you should never see your dogs nails curl under, and yes, you never want to hear them on the floor.
