| Where do I begin? My precious Yorkie-Poo is 12 weeks old and is looking a bit... scruffy Her hair is getting too long around her toes and her chest area. I don't want to take her to a groomer, I'd really love to learn how to groom her myself. Any tips? Videos? Websites? Thanks!

| Also curious, what brand of clippers to buy? What about scissors for touching up hair around her face? Which nail clippers are best? Thanks!

| Hi, I have had a couple of litters of Yorkiepoos, and they seem to all turn out different. You never know what you're going to end up with. If she has more poodly hair, then you probably do need clipper, but if she has more Yorkie-ish hair, you could probably just use scizzors. I got books at Barnes and Noble. They have a lot to choose from, or amazon.com is another place to look. I'd buy one each, poodle and Yorkie grooming, then if you feel you need clippers, I use a 4F blade on my poodle, but that's pretty short 3F gives a longer cut. If you hold the blade sideways to look at the angle of it you can see about how long the hair will be after its cut. I use an Oster clipper. The people that sell them are usually knowledeable about the clippers, but not grooming dogs. Hope that's some help, and not too confusing! |

| There is a member here who offers a grooming video. I don't have it myself but I have heard fantastic things about it. Here is a link to her sales thread - note that it was started in April of '08 so you might want to double check with her before ordering: http://www.yorkietalk.com/forums/yor...ml#post2442218 As far as clippers go, buy the best set you can afford and take good care of them. NEVER EVER clip a dirty dog, it will dull your blades quicker than anything. I found this out the hard way with a $275 set of cordless Andis clippers we used on the horses. After several years of very heavy use the clipers finally wore out - I am going to have to bite the bullet and order another set of Anids - I will get the smaller cordless set for small animals. |

| Thanks everyone! it's hard to explain her coat. It's a perfect combo of yorkie and poodle hair. Here's the best photo i can find that shows how her hair looks.... (The groomer took this and sent it to me a few days before we picked her up. She's all wet in the photo, looks like she just had a bath) ??? but it shows her hair the best. Anyways, today I took a pair of clipping scissors and did a small job around her face (i saw the video sticky posted on this forum, and did what the video showed around the eyes!) my poor baby couldn't possibly see well w/ that fur around her eyes. And trimmed the hairs on her chest and legs. She looks much cleaner! I really want to just self-groom her. Don't wanna risk sending her to someone that will mess up her pretty hair!

This may be a dumb question... but are the clippers you use on a human's hair the same as the ones for a dog?

| No they aren't the same. I bought my oster clippers at a vet supply store. You can get them at farm and ranch stores too. |

| She definitely looks like she has a lot of poodle hair. I think you'd like using clippers on her in stead of the scizzors. I just trim the legs and head of my poodle, and use clippers on the body. It looks so much nicer. Its just a little hard for them to get used to the noise of the clippers. |
