| Question for the professional groomers in regards to ear trimming Maximus was supposed to get his ears trimmed yesterday. We are new to professional grooming. I do try to comb him at least once or twice a day. The groomer I am/was going to use was in a car wreck before Christmas. She is slowly getting started again. I didn't have an appt because she said just to bring him in. It would only take about 5 minutes. So, when I called, she didn't answer the phone. I just figured she was in the middle of grooming. She never called me back. I had to go to town again today, so I swung by there, and she wasn't there again. Which is fine. I realize she is just getting back on her feet after her accident. My question is, how hard is it to start grooming myself? In regards to ear trimming, is it fairly simple to do? My dh has a Wahl trimmer, what size attachment do you recommend using? I d/l the book in the groomers section (the sticky link) and I read this link, Jon-An's Yorkshire Terriers (How to train Yorkies ears to stand). What supplies do I need to start grooming? I was reading here on YT and I am most definitely interested in a hands free blow dryer. Any other tricks and/or tips? Thanks!

Donating YT 10K Club Member | I'm not a "professional" but I've been grooming my own since a botched hair cut and have always trimmed ears in between visits. It's easy. Shave the back and front of ears in an upside down V. I use the clippers without a blade. To get the edges sharp...I use haircutting shears...using the fingers on one hand to feel the edge of the ears and the other to cut. I also use my clippers for sanitary shaves and tummies plus between paw pads.

| I shave the top 1/3 of the ears with a #10 blade in the shape of an upside down V. Trim the edges very carefully with scissors. It depends how seriously you want to get into grooming yourself. Are you talking just doing your own Yorkie or professionally? I went to a pet styling school with intense on the job training from a very respected professional (former GroomTeam USA member and she was on the Board of Directors for GroomTeam, etc.). It was very expensive, but well worth the proper training. If you just want to do your own dog(s), then try to find a groomer that would be willing to show you how. There are many great books out there that can help you (and online helps). One of the things that makes a bigger difference than some think is proper prepping before the groom. Proper bathing, ear cleaning, nail trimming, proper drying, emptying the anal glands, thorough brushing (go through with a comb after brushing completely to make sure there are no mats), make a huge difference in the end "product." The difficulty also depends on if you want to keep the coat long or learn how to do different types of cuts. Basically, it depends on how good you want to be and how seriously you want to get into it. Yorkies are one of the easiest/most forgiving breeds for owners to groom at home. If you want to learn more than that, it takes a lot of time, effort, and a good education. Some people go through all that and just don't have the talent, but you learn pretty quickly if you "have it" or not. Hope this helps.

| Thank you. I'm so scared I will mess it up. I guess because I've never seen a dog groomed before and after. I know the hair will grow back if I mess it up, I just don't want him to look silly before I do. lol

| You're welcome. You'd want to get a pair of dog clippers and a #10 blade for the potty areas, and I use a #40 to shave out the v-pad on the feet. Do you want to leave the dog's hair long or do some kind of puppy/teddy bear cut?

| I kind of want to see what he looks like long, but originally, before I got him, I always loved the puppy/teddy bear cut. I really can't imagine him with a full coat.

There is also a tutorial in the "Grooming" section here - and it's very good too!

| Thanks for all your helpful comments. I got a phone call from the groomer this a.m. and she was very apologetic for not being available. I told her I understood, and I wasn't really concerned since we didn't have an official appointment. I decided to make one with her for next Saturday. I can't wait! Maximus will have his first professional grooming experience.
