| How often to wash them during winter??? During the summer, I've been giving Cassi a bath every 5-7 days. I noticed after I bathe her, she starts to get oily on top of her head and around the ears on day 3-4. Currently, I've been using the Petco SPA shampoo/conditioner to wash her from head to tail. Following that I use a conditioner just on her body for every other wash. Now that winter is arriving, how often should I bathe her? Also if you have any product recommendation, it would be much appreciated.

| Okay, I guess I will try to bath her every 1.5 week and see how it goes from there. I usually bring a small portable heater in the bathroom, so that it's extra warm.

| My girl is greasy no matter the season and needs a bath about every 5 days but I wait it out to 7 in the summer and about 10 - 12 days in the winter. I find that her skin does get dryer in the winter even though her hair will be greasy. I will throw a towel in the dryer and holler to DH when we are almost done so he can bring it in to us on the very cold days of winter. Yes she IS spoiled |

| As the heat makes the air very dry here in the winter, I try to do it only every two weeks. I have a couple that get pretty stringy looking when they go that long, but I also use a moisterizing conditioner more during the winter also. Espree Animal Products -

| Bella Too Bella also get oily hair after 3 to 4 days (my son starts calling her ratdog at this point). Plus she gets stinky face after 5 to 6 days. Then the doggy smell kicks in any longer then that. But I hate to bath her too much in winter. I tried using a baby face wipe on her "OMG" she thinks I am trying to kill her. I tried using a baby wipe (all natural kind) on her private areas again she thinks shes being tortured. I am using Petcare puppy Shampoo, (doesn't burn eyes) and pantene conditioner. She sure looks and smells good for the first 3 or 4 days. If anyone has suggestions let us know. thanks |

Phantom Queen Morrigan Donating Member | I used to bath morgan every week because her head hair looked greasy. However since i started using Milksheen regularly her head doesn't get greasy. the only thing i have to worry about is stinky beard and that usually is from her tear stains. so i just clean that up and give her beard a little cleaning and she lasts longer. hot or cold outside i bath her whenever she needs it. never had a problem with dry skin or freezing puppy feet

| Hi. I am new here. My name is Darla. I have a 4 month old Yorkie named, Strawberry. When I was at the vets last week he asked how often I bathed her and I told him, 'once a week'. He looked shocked and told me that was too much and I should only bath her every 3-4 weeks! I laughed out loud at that comment. Once a week is me holding out! In this rainy weather she starts to get stinky dog smell at 4 days and stringy hair at about 5 days. I mean...I understand how they need their oils in their skin to not dry out, but I can't tolerate a stinky girl. She has free run of the house, including my bed....so she'd better be clean. Anyway....on to the point. Haha...there are drops you can get, but I also have heard of olive oil in the food. Does anyone know anything more about this? I am pretty sure that is what we did for our yorkie, Kiwi when she got dry in the Fall/Winter. And I bathed Kiwi once a week for 16 years. However, that was a childhood pet and I was not really paying attention to what my mom did with her food, but olive oil rings a bell. I was thinking if it is not harmful, I may try it to see if it helps keeping her from getting to dry and scratching. Any thoughts? |

I've been learning about the Bergamasco breed, and you should only wash them TWICE A YEAR to protect the skin. They should be brushed often to distribute oils through the mats, which they are supposed to have, but only 2 baths a year! (A Bergamasco sheepdog looks kind of like a Puli, but with flat mats instead of dreadlocks. Here's a picture: http://www.kennels.co.uk/images/P.Bergamasco.jpg )

| 4 to 5 Months I swear when we first got Bella and took her to the vet he said bathe her every 4 to 5 months. When he left the room I said, to my daughter "did he say 4 to 5 months" she said, "I think so". Whew she would be beyond stinky by that point. Yuck. Well the most we have gone is two weeks and that is because we were busy not because she didn't need it. |

| Oh dear me.... dreadlocks! Hehe. What an interesting breed of dog. I have never seen one of those before. I would never be able to let Strawberry go without a bath for 4-5 months. As it is, by the end of the week she is pretty stinky and stringy. Her hair is not all that long yet, but I did notice her starting to get a few tangles so I have began brushing her so she gets used to it. I think maybe a few drops of olive oil in her puppy formula might help keep her skin and hair in good shape so I can get away with a weekly bath as I am used to. I am going to try it. From what I have been reading some extra virgin olive oil in her food several times a week won't hurt. Just a 1/4 of a tsp perhaps in her food once a day. Thanks for the welcome, everyone. |
